Hello Can anyone let me know where in Birmingham a man would need to go in the 1920s for an Electrical Engineers Draughtsman training? Could you also let me know exactly what an electrical engineering draughtsman does? Thank you Shirley

Hi, I am not a draughtsman but I was a Tracer, and an electrical engineering draughtsman was an engineer who drew electrical diagrams for the people who would construct the electrical components for whatever they were being fitted into. He would have an apprenticeship with a company, engineering in general or a company specialising in electronics. My apprecnticeship was with English Electric Company, so that is the type of company I mean. If you can look into which engineering works there were in Birmingham at the time you may find a clue there. I am sure there were quite a few. Perhaps the Library could help with that. Hope this has helped. PS A Tracer is a person who traced the engineering drawings onto linen to preserve them. I served a 2 year apprenticeship and a draughtsman would have at least served a 5 year apprenticeship, mostly on the shop floor and then being promoted to the drawing office. Margaret
