Quickest reply so far from ONS 3 days - I suppose it depends how may requests they get!

Hi Kay I've used both ONS (online) and local offices - I've found that the price has been the same. The local offices have been quicker, but on the other hand, the certificates you get from Stockport have been scanned from the original whereas the local ones that I have received have been transcribed by hand. I prefer to have the copy of the original and have (so far) had no problems with getting the certificate. One local office (Newham) couldn't trace a birth certificate which Southport had no trouble locating. Helen

Kay, I've used Gateshead and Sunderland in person and by post and they are both very helpful, also last week sent to Durham Eastern at Peterlee with Wednesday evening post, had certificate back Friday Morning post. Couldn't ask for better service, also if you send to Local office by post and the cert is not there you will get ALL your money back. Send to Stockport and you only get half back.

Hello Kay, I use three local Registry Offices and if I visit, two will usually deal with the certificates there and then. Occasionally I have to waste an hour or two on shopping while they 'fit it into' their hectic schedule. One will only take an order, with the exact information and cheque, by post. The certs usually arrive within 3 or 4 days by post. I've always been charged £7. per certificate. Maybe I've just been lucky, hope you are too! Linda.

Kay usuallu the local offices are quicker but some not all won't deall with old certs. My own local office will look for birth/death certs but refuses marriage. Also some will accept you card details over the phone but some only accept chqs. I'd give the office in question a call and see what they are prepared to do for you. If you look at the thread titled ONS elisabeth has pit the address of where you can find details of all reg offices. Also are you in Washington England or Washington USA? as the ONS only sends to Uk I believe Shelli

I know it costs £7 to order certs from ONS and it normailly takes about 7-10 days. Does anyone know approx how much it costs if you buy them in the area that the BMD were registered? And is it a quicker service? I need to order some more and get too impatient waiting for POstie to arrive. Kay
