Hi everyone This is a copy from the Campaign for the eatly release of the 1911 census. Please read it then send a copy to YOUR M.P. and get him to sign the Early Day Motion 871 as soon as possible. Any more info is on Denis McCready's web page (see below) ************************************************ From Denis McCready - I am writing to you because it seems from our records that your MP has NOT signed our very important petition for MPs on the 1911 Census. We still have a good chance of winning if we can interest at least 350 MPs in our 1911 Census campaign and persuade them to give us their backing within the next few days. We have heard that there are some MPs, like Martin Salter (Lab, Reading West), who seem to think the census should be closed for 100 years. And we’ve discovered that an MP who is a Minister is not allowed to sign any EDMs. Other MPs, like Kenneth Clarke (Con, Rushcliffe), consider most EDMs a complete waste of time because they don’t lead to a debate. But this issue is so important that the House of Commons has already found time for a debate. It seems that there could be lots of very sensible and reasonable MPs who believe that the 1911 census closure period is far too long. So, if your MP has not signed our petition, please spare a few minutes to remind him/her about Early Day Motion 871 which reads as follows. That this House notes that the average closure period for pre-1911 UK decennial population census records is 80 years; that informants were not guaranteed that the 1911 census records would be closed for 100 years; that the release of the 1911 Census Online for England & Wales in 2004/5 would be likely to generate between £10m and £40m in revenue before the scheduled release date of 2012; and urges the Lord Chancellor and the Registrar General to use their existing powers, under section 5(1) of the Public Records Act 1958, to arrange for the early release of the 1911 Census Online, thus making the most of a golden opportunity to generate very substantial income between 2004 and 2012 from those records and facilitating genealogical research worldwide. They represent one in every 11 MPs, which (Mr Carmichael tells us) is a good level of support for the first 8 working days. At least 31 MPs signed after the 1911 Census debate took place, so they obviously believe the government should be releasing the census before 2012.
