I totally agree. As I said, I did enter basic details as a bit of fun but once I was contacted by someone who thought they could be related, I got very excited, joined and replied straight away. Unfortunately there was no connection but I had been bitten by the bug and now have quite a few of my ancestors on the site. I sent a message a few months ago to someone with the same names registered and was very annoyed when I got no reply - I tend to get very excited when I think I've got a possible match and check my messages every 5 minutes! Eventually (about 3 weeks later) the lady concerned did reply and we are indeed distantly related. I don't think the people who add names for fun realise what we who are doing it seriously go through when we see a name that is probably a relation/ancestor!! Sam

Hi Sam, Yes I think you're right. I don't think that you should be allowed to add names if you are not a full member. I see a name and think "this could be the person I'm looking for to complete a link" when they don't reply it's so disappointing. Maybe things will change to only allow members to add names. Sandra.

Hi Sandra there have been lots of threads on this subject recently. A lot of people on here are not full members and therefore can't reply to contacts without paying the £7.50. Also, lots of people came on here and added just basic details after following the link from friendsreunited - myself included. I got hooked after gettinga couple of messages from potential relatives but i bet there are loads of people who have never been back to this site ever agin! Sam

Genes Reunited is a brilliant idea and great research tool, however I do wonder if some people add names to the database just for fun and are not really serious researchers. I have sent numerous messages to people whose 'names' match those in my family tree asking for further details to see of they match my relatives, but I am amazed that most people do not even bother to reply. Why post names if you are not a serious researcher? If your details don't match those of the enquirer, just send them a message to tell them as a matter of courtesy please!!!!!!!!
