This site is very good for information on Essex Parishes.

http://www.historyhouse.co.uk/placeE/essexe02.html

Some of the Walfords voted in the 1847 election.

Tree on ancestry says the parents are

John Walford 1787 -1860?
Hannah Johnson 1788-1860

Charles whitaker wade 1796-1864
Hannah Woodward 1797 -1884

patchem

patchem Report 28 Jul 2014 17:52

If you look at the 1861 census image, then Thomas Walford is living next door to a possible brother or other relative.

Sorry Julie, I misread Hannah Louise, her name is Hannah Louisa.

There is a tree on Ancestry with the family on it and a photo of the grave.

Using that tree as a clue, I saw the marriage data on the SEAX site. It is
at Fingringhoe, Essex on 3 July 1840:
Thomas Johnson Walford, of full age, bachelor, mariner of Fingringhoe, father John Walford, mariner.
Hannah Louisa Wade, off full age, spinster of Fingringhoe, father Charles Wade, carpenter.
Witnesses: Charles Wade, Sophia Wade.

You can go to http://maps.familysearch.org/ and see the 1850s parishes.
Click on Essex, then list all the parishes and select, say, East Donyland.
At the top of the list there's a "Layers" tab, so you can layer on the civil rego districts.

Kense Report 28 Jul 2014 08:25

From the parish records Elisha Walford was baptised at East Donyland on 6th October 1850. He was the son of Thomas, a fisherman of East Donyland, and Hannah Louisa.

A subscription to the SEAX site may be worthwhile (24 hours for £5) for anyone who knows what parish their ancestors came from. You can get a lot of marriage details that way which would cost nearly £10 per certificate via the GRO. Make sure you familiarise yourself with that site first though.

Edit: I should mention that the site contains images only, you have to look at many before you find the ones you want.

The parishes in Essex and the movement of them between registration districts can be found here:

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/ess.html

One thing to be careful of is that the village of Tendring was not in the registration district of Tendring.

Welcome to the boards, Julie.

Could you give us a few dates, please?

Also, have you looked to see if anyone on genes has any of your family in their trees on here, and tried to contact them for more information? (Use Search/Search All Member Trees tab, top right)
