I agree with all the above comments! - My husband calls me an expensive woman! He says it was so much cheaper when i just used to do the gardening! Everyone in the family didn't want to know about the "family history" ( I have been researching on and off for about 17 years) now in the last 2 months I have had all these relies coming out of the woodwork to "see how far I've got" - I'm thinking of charging a viewing fee! of the family tree. But i just can't stop, it would be nice though to have a dream which doesn't contain census pages! Or a little voice that invades your dreams as to where to find an elusive family member. My husband woke me one night asking who the hell was edward? A friend asked who i would most like to ask to dinner - can you guess what the answer was? - a dead relatives of course! judy

Trouble Report 3 Dec 2004 00:44

Just to warning to the uninitiated… You start off waking in the night, remembering a way to search for that elusive rellie…. You progress to staying up half the night (or all night) because there is just ONE more census image you want to check…. You end up dreaming about them when you FINALLY manage to grab one or two hours sleep…… And then the final confirmation that you have a PROBLEM…… Your husband informs you that for the first time in your life you have started talking in your sleep……’allegedly’ I had a whole conversation with my Great Great Grandmother Unfortunately she didn’t tell me where I could trace her daughter in law’s parents!!!

Put me on the anorak list too! I can't believe how addicted I've become to this hobby. My house is a bomb site and I really can't be bothered. It's the baby's 1st birthday tomorrow and we're having the in-laws to stay for the weekend (urgh!). So much to do and no interest in doing it. I have his cards written, presents wrapped, cake ordered and balloons blown up. Now...back to that 1871 census..............!!!! Lou

Sorry Comrade, but I have unilaterally decided to change our name to ALF - Anoraks Liberation Front - more zingy for this day and age.

What about the roll of wallpaper under the arm, with lots of scribble on it that only we can read. AA unite. Julie

Yes, as members of AA, I think we should get some sort of corporate image. Apart from the anorak and logo, what about several pencils in the top pocket, a file of loose papers and thick glasses. Possibly a large magnifying glass hung round the neck and RSI bandage on the wrists. Any other suggestions??

I think I'll ask for an anorak on my Christmas list! I'm lucky in that my family are both interested and supportive, now husband is keen on doing HIS tree, so guess who's going to be signing up with GR?!

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 1 Dec 2004 09:01

Put me down for an anorak too! My house is a mess, there is no food in, post is piling up and where am I? On the computer trawling the message boards or researching!!!! I hate the glazed look from rellies too - get it all the time. Slowly they are all being dragged further in but are still happy to let me be the one spending all the time and money on it all and just feeding them the info! Perhaps I should print off the family tree and sell it to them all - £10 a copy. Lorraine

It was such a relief to read all these postings and to know that I am not going barmy, just a member of the A.A's complete with my anorak. Long may we all have lots of fun knocking down our "brick walls". My only regret is that I never started years ago, so much time wasted. G

Well, it was in the Records Office and I had already blotted my copy book by having the film reel roll across the floor!! I did give a loudly whispered "YES!" though!

Yes, it is a real rush isnt it. I still remember the feeling seeing the parish records which linked my family in the East End back to the Norfolk village I live now (with no knowledge of this root!) giving my GGFx2 baptism record. I wanted to scream!

Yes you are absolutely right. It keeps coming into your brain when you are thinking about other things and it is very frustrating when you can't go and find the answer right there and then.

Brian, mine get switched off when I go to bed then on again in the morning. Might just as well leave it on, last night couldn't sleep so was up agin at 2 a.m. searching the web again!!!!! Just had a thought, how much electricity does the 'puter use? And here I am again. Decided that the marriage of gggrandfather i found is probably the right one so am sending for the certificate hoping to go back another generation. I think money for Christmas presents would be the best to pay for all these certificates!!!

Perhaps we ought to start a new AA Organisation - Ancestors Anonymous.

What's this about turning the computer on? Ours is on the whole time and I can't resist "having a peek" every time I go past!
