hi ..tony by the sea.. is it calm or rough 2day?? i have a long, long list of medals, items (letters, watches, photos) some names i quickly jotted... SMEATON royal navy reserves GREEN arthur edward (52 sagan terrace fleetwood lanks (master mariner birkenhead) dob 16/2/81 (1881?) ive had the link copied for some time..tony steven tarling ? anyone else that is a wiz with cutting and pasting your welcome for a copy.. if your folks SHOULD be on there at least you'd get a close up coloured copy of the rows of medals these men and women shed blood for, as well as some with their i.d photo's and family shots- faces clearly shown! and the ships ,air craft, service collegues they were with. some have their full life accomplishments, way they died ,where their burried, lived- good luck kathleen...(either pass your email to me or message from gr) xx

I wonder how they come to be on ebay. I guess in some cases maybe they have no children and they end up in house clearance. My brother was promised the war medals by our grandad (he is the oldest grandchild). When he died, my Nan gave them to our younger cousin. Then my dad had his father's medals professionally mounted and his brother got hold of them. I really do hope that those who have them treasure them. I can't see our younger cousin having children to pass them on to though.

Thanks Stephen & Tony No names that mean anything to me but I am off to a meeting of The Somerset Light Infantry Association tonight,I will draw their attention to the list. I couldn't see any Som. LI on the list but some of our members were also in the Durham LI & the KOYLI which I could see. I would be grateful if you do see any Somerset if you could add them to the thread Thanks again, you're stars Vivienne

Stephen Report 29 Mar 2005 13:38

Carol (in sometimes Glorious Somerset): Many thanks for that great tip. I tried it with some of these names and it works sometimes, but you probably also need to include the 'Collectables' category (the sub-category 'Militaria' contains a lot of the medals as well). If you have a common surname (or a surname that is a word) you get swamped, but with an advanced search you could try: must contain both 'surname' and 'medal'. So many thanks for that tip. Onwards and backwards...

when you click on the 'see other items' that these collectors, or dealers have for sale you also can find a great many post cards with love notes to their english sweet hearts, from service men/ woman abroad during ww1 & 2. some have photos of themselves complete in uniform there was some with pretty unique names too! I was looking at them here online in usa. i will check with you if your ebay has the same items for sale.as here. i'll post a few names too ...tomorrow (your today! ) cheers x k x

Tony and Stepen You have both gone to a lot of trouble about these medals. Do not know a quick way to get at possible ancestors, but a list like this is really invaluable, a pity it would be too late for any Family History Mags. Sadly none of mine on there. I only hope that someone gets some benefit from your hard work. Janet
