Lisa Do you have your mother/fathers birth certificate that will give her full name. Also the marriage certificate as that will give her father and his occupation. See if you can find any deaths for them as well you will then be able to tie in the ages with the census. Make sure you have all the information correct as it doesn't take much to go down a wrong road. I have just been in touch with a 2nd cousin, we didn't know we only lived a few miles apart. I had been trying to find his grandfather the only brother of my grandmother I had no information on. Everyone else I knew about and was account for. This 2nd cousin had gone down the wrong road, all those years of hard work only to find its not the right family. It did help that I had a death certificate which proved our g grandfather, he didn't know when or how he died. When he questioned an Aunt after we spoke yes she knew just forgot to tell him. So if you have any information no matter how small write it down in a book, so if you get anymore information from anyone else in the family you can add to it, something may come to light which you will then be able to say yes we are on the right trail. Good luck Irene

I tried looking for Arthurs birth but couldn't find anything...I also tried the next sibling Henry. I think I may have found the first daughter Florrie though and will order her cert to see if it will shed any light...I'm worried it will be the same as her 2 sisters though. As for the Hawes in Rickinghall, I know it's not them as my Hawes lived in the Pub on Fore Hamlet which is confirmed by my gran and the 1901 census. Thank you all for your help and suggestions...like I said I'm stumped. I am going to go back to the 'family' member that I got Emma's birth cert from and ask how she came to that one to make sure it's correct. In the meantime if you have any bright ideas...please let me know!!! Kind regards, Lisa

Irene, when I said she'd be commiting bigamy, she would. Emma Adelaide is in 1881 with the husband she married in 1875. If this is the same one that married William, they'd both be alive at the same time because William is with Emma also in 1881. I think this is probably the wrong one. I'll have a look see if I can find anything else. Lisa, there are occasions when mothers don't put other surnames on birth certs. I don't think this is one of them though, unless she was a different Emma, married to someone else.

Well it may cost a bit but you could check 1837(.)com remove the (). They should have married before Arthur was born have you find his birth yet to confirm that is where they said they were. Irene

Irene, here's working backwards:- grandmother Margaret Smith...her parents on birth cert Harry Smith and Ethel May Hawes. Harry Smith is like looking for a needle in a haystack and I already knew that Ethel came from Stowmarket and found her with her siblings easily on the 1901 census so ordered birth cert for her. gt grandmother Ethel May Hawes... born 21/5/1891 to William Hawes and Emma Hawes (formerly Abbott). Her sister Victoria is mentioned on the 1891 and 1901 census and I also have her birth cert which confirms exactly the same info for her parents as Ethels. Here on in I am lost. I 'found' the gt grandaughter of Victoria who sent me Emma Abbotts birth cert and as previously mentioned I had assumed that it was the correct one. If it's not I don't know how I am going to find the correct one. Especially as irrespective of her birthdate I can't find her linked to William Hawes. The certs have only confirmed what I already knew but have not provided me with enough info to work off. I really needed to find that marriage to help I think...........oh well!!

They didn't seem to follow all the rules, I have one my g grandfathers sister, she was widowed young but I couldn't find a 2nd marriage for her. Didn't think to check under her maiden name again for a long time. I didn't think they could do that, another on my husbands side called herself Eliza Blake on her childrens births, I looked for their marriage and didn't find it. A few years later while looking in Hampshire 1851 census index for someone else I was looking in the parish where this couple ended up I had a possible parents for Eliza but could not prove it. I always look for names I am looking for when helping others and there were her possible parents I then found the marriage under the husbands name in Winchester took a gamble and it paid off, she was born Eliza Churcher her parents married two months after she was born, but she did put her fathers name on the marriage certificate. I wonder if they have a big table up there watching us and having a good giggle at our expense, maybe they even have bets on who will find what. Irene

Lisa, which child is your ancester, do you have a birth certificate for him/her that would answer your questions. I have found them in 1901 in St Clements, Emma and William are still there and saying they were born in Stowmarket. Maybe they were and that they moved back there. Irene

Irene, if she had been married before would her married name not be referred to on the birth certs I have for her children with William?

Irene

Irene Report 15 Apr 2005 21:04

Tracey she could have been married twice if the first husband died not long after she married. She was old enough in 75, if she was married to William when the 1st child was born about 1878/9, Irene

Lisa Report 15 Apr 2005 21:01

Tracey, that is so strange about Emma marrying Samuel Miller and living in Ipswich. Maybe it is the wrong Emma. If it is it begs the question who is my Emma Abbott? and what about William? Where is he?...so many questions!! lol

Lisa Report 15 Apr 2005 20:57

To be honest Helen a 'new' rellie forwarded Emma's birth cert to me so until now I had presumed it was correct. If it's not then I don't have a clue. I have a William and Emma Hawes formerly Abbott on my gt gran's birth cert and wouldn't know how to find out anything more as I have nothing else to search on. They have moved around so much that she could have come from anywhere!! Tracy, I too found Emma Adelaide married in Windsor but as you say not to William Hawes. As you can see I am going around in circles!! lol

Only if she was commiting bigamy, Irene :) She's with William in 1881 too.

Irene

Irene Report 15 Apr 2005 20:48

Hi Dea didn't want to intrude on Liza's but George was born as far as I can tell 1881 Petersfield, 1891, Camberley, 1901 Aldershot, he was living in Merrow. Not been able to find him yet in 1871. Irene

Lisa How do you know this is the correct birth certificate for Emma? Was it the only one you could find around the right time/area or did she use the name Adelaide on other documents and so prove this must be the right one?

Lisa

Lisa Report 15 Apr 2005 20:27

Emma Adelaide Abbott was born Dove Lane, St Helen, Ipswich, Suffolk on 13/03/1857

Lisa

Lisa Report 15 Apr 2005 20:25

Yep, on my gt grandmother Ethel's birth cert it says Emma Hawes formerly Abbott. I couldn't find anything so I got Ethels sister Victoria's birth cert as well and it says the same on there. I also have Emma's birth cert and she was definately an Abbott. Her mother is also mentioned as Mary Ann Abbott but there is no mention of the father on there. Emma has adopted her married name on all certs and census which is why I was confident she was definately married to William. It is going to be a huge nightmare if they weren't married!!! lol
