Debby Report 3 May 2005 18:45

I have recently had contact with a relative of mine - 4th cousins! She has seen my gg grandfathers grave in the churchyard in Kendal! So tomorrow I might be going to Kendal for the day and I'm really excited! We'll be able to take photos of the church (inside & out) and the gravestone! Also, I've just printed off a map and all the roads are on there where they lived so I'm hoping some of them may still be there for another photo opportunity! Hubby even said he might allow me an hour in the Records Office LOL! Debby

Have a great time, it's brilliant when that happens. I yearn to go 'travelling'. Haven't done much as of yet, but I will....

Thanks Diane Think it will be lovely to stand in the church and know your ancestors were baptised, married & buried there but weird as well for wanting to do that! Debby

Not weird at all! A lot of my local ancestors were baptised and married in the parish church not far from here and I'd been in the church on many occasions before I started doing the family tree so didn't realise the significance back then. I recently attended a wedding there and it was amazing to realise that they had possibly stood where I was standing and had sat in the same seats all those years ago. Have a wonderful day and take lots of photos (several of each shot in case any fail to come out!). Above all, savour the nostalgia cos it'll keep you buzzing for ages! Lou

I'm going on a trip too and I can't wait! My hubby and I are going to Wales for a couple of days next week. We've even taken days off work. I'm going in search of the places they lived, went to school, married, and buried. I will be taking loads of photos. Will be staying in a nice plush hotel in the Breacon Beacons......bliss! Just hope it doesn't rain.... fingers crossed. Luckily my hubby loves looking round churches, so hopefully he will not get bored of looking for my Welsh ancestors. Andrea

We're taking the dog! He'll have to keep himself busy looking after her! Just read there were narrow yards and lanes branching from the main street. There were 150 yards often named after the owner of the main house which usually stood at the top of the yard - mine were living at Highgate Yard so hoping I'll see some examples. Debby

Andrea Another good one - schools - hadn't thought of that! Wish I'd thought of hotel - if I don't get everything done and want to return I could book a cottage - brilliant! Jenny - I wish someone else int the family enjoyed it as much as me - a few of my cousins do but they're not local! Debby

Sheila You are lucky. I wish my ancestors had lived close, but then again it's a nice way to explore the UK. Most of my ancestors seem to be in places you would never dream of visiting. Regards Andrea

How lovely Sheila - you're very lucky! Only thing is nearly all my g grandmother's family married there and where does she marry? Salford Register Office! Debby

Andrea Report 3 May 2005 21:30

Debby I've had some ancestors marrying at registry offices and I must admit I feel a little disappointed, as they're not photogenic places really....are they!? I was so exited when I found one ancestor had been baptised at the oldest church in Sunderland! Regards Andrea

Andrea My areas seem quite nice so far except the local ones although that has it's advantage of being on your doorstep! I've had a couple of registry offices so far - would much rather have a church! Debby

Hope you have a wonderful day Debby. I found this on the boards ages ago and saved it .... ================== Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest Neglected and alone The name and date are chiselled out On polished marble stone It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn You did not know that I exist You died and I was born Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh and blood and bone Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own Dear Ancestor..the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so I wonder if you lived and loved I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot And come to visit you. Me and my parents hired a farmhouse for a week on the outskirts of one of our ancestral villages, wonderful scenery, friendly & helpful locals, we even met the current owner of the blacksmiths forge where our ancestors worked (its now a converted family home) and he allowed us to see inside his home, went to the local carnival too, the atmosphere was amazing, a real community It was the best holiday I have had in years (since Australia in 1999) George

Going tomorr0w now - had to have pooch to the vet but she'll be ok. Might get some housework done today - got the week off and spent most of it on here! Des - thanks for that info - will try the library if time although I know quite a lot - it's the snippets I'm now after. Gerri - I too printed that poem off - it's lovely - makes you realise what it's all about. George - Sounds like I'll need to return - a day obviously is not going to be long enough! I've also Somerset to visit one day - lots of ancestors there. Jacqui - Hope you too have a great day. Debby
