Thanks Sarah also with the Andrews family was a boy with the surname Kirold (sp) who was the head of the household's b-i-l. I assumed it must have been Ada's brother, making her Ada Kirold previously, but of course could be a bil from another sibling of the family Sarah

Hi Kate Yep that's my Clara, and those Andrews people, well..... I can't make a connection with them. I've had a look on 1881 and there are quite a few William G Robert's born 1874/3 in Cornwall.

Kate

Kate Report 6 Jun 2005 10:13

Is this Clara in 1901? If so, I'm even more confused as I can't see the connection with the family she is visiting. Name Estimated Birth Year Birthplace Relationship Civil Parish County/Island View Image Ada Andrews abt 1873 Norwich, Norfolk, England Wife Southwark St George the Martyr London Donald Andrews abt 1873 Oxton, Nottinghamshire, England Head Southwark St George the Martyr London George Kriold abt 1881 Norwich, Norfolk, England Brother-in-law Southwark St George the Martyr London Clara Roberts abt 1898 Lambeth, London, England Visitor Southwark St George the Martyr London Anyway, what I was thinking about the William Grose Roberts I mentioned above is that if only we can find a marriage and / or death for him it might rule him in or out. Kate.

Kate - Clara had been shipped off to stay as a 'visitor' with some other people in Lambeth. She was with the Andrews family, more little mite she was only 3 or 4. Seems odd that none of them were at home. all with different people Sarah

It may have been a mistake made by the enumerator or the original transcriber, seeing him on his own as a relatively young man and assuming him to be single Beth :)

Thanks Kate Common names run right through my tree - John Morris being the most popular - I've got loads of them!!!! Sarah

Sarah - this may not help much, but FreeBMD has a birth registration for a William Grose Roberts June 1873 at Bodmin, Cornwall. This could be the William G. Roberts on the 1901 census, but whether he is the William who was married to Hester is another matter. I can't help feeling that if it was him, he would have given his full name on Clara's birth certificate, though. It's a shame William Roberts is such a common name! I have plenty of rellies who pretended to be married when registering their children's births and/or lied about their marital status on censuses, but it just seems unlikely that a policeman would have done the same, doesn't it? Oh, and where was Clara in 1901?? Kate.

Sarah Report 6 Jun 2005 09:28

Birth certificate of daughter in 1897 shows Hester as 'hester hannah roberts formerly Jones' so what threw me was William Roberts down as single on 1901. Unless they pretended to be on certificate. That would be just my luck Sarah

The Bag

The Bag Report 6 Jun 2005 09:25

So were they married by 1901?

The RG number is the method of indexing RG 13 are always 1901 RG 12 are always 1891 etc then it is subdivided into piece, folio and page

Sarah Report 6 Jun 2005 09:18

Hi again Sarah - I did try and look for marriage of Hester and William but that Hester if proving very elusive and looking for a marriage of William Roberts was like looking for a needle in a haystack. But at least I've got Cornwall to go on now. Geez, you would think they should have had some sort of law that made everyone stay in their proper home on census night lol Sarah

Sarah

Sarah Report 6 Jun 2005 09:13

And yep they had a daughter after Clara called Grace Elsie. I've sent for her birth certificate to make sure all details match that of Clara's What does R G number mean though???

Sarah

Sarah Report 6 Jun 2005 09:06

Hiya Yep she was known as Ettie. what I have is their daughter's birth certificate, *big slap on the wrist now' she was born 1897 at 257 Waterloo Road, and the informant William Roberts lived at 234 Trinity Road, Wandsworth Common. Sarah
