tracy , another thing that makes it so hard is if you look on the 1901 census charles [stephen] smelt states he is 40 lizzie [elizabeth] states she is 41 but stephen was born dec qrt 1860 she was june qrt 1861 so surley the ages should be the other way round 1901 jessie is listed as being 10 ,she was born jan 1889 so she should of been 12 there are 100,s of smelts in yorkshire why do mine have to be the pain in the butt to find all the other's back to 1700,s was easy. catherine

My lot are the same. I have one (more, but this one is the worst), the father was John, he has 9 kids. Those 9 kids go on to have 9 kids each, and call their kids all the same names as they were given. They marry wives of the same name and make my life a misery lol

I'd go for Sculcoates as that's where both Jessie and May were born. Probably the 1893 one. You can specify a reference check of Elizabeth Smelt, nee Mason to be sure you get the right one. Or, ask for both Sculcoates ones with the reference check, and only send one payment. They'll just send the right one (hopefully) I don't know if it'll do you any good, but it will give another address as a point of reference.

Hi Your original message says she is with her grandparents in 1871. Is this Edmund and Mary Pearson? They have a granddaughter with them called Elizabeth Mason. In 1861 they are living with daughter Elizabeth Pearson b1842 Hull daughter Helen Pearson b1837 Hull Son John Pearson b1839 Hull In 1860 an Elizabeth Pearson marries Thomas Mackerly but this is not the same Elizabeth as she is still with her parents in 1861 - not married Mary Pearsons death appears to be registered in June 1872, I can't find Edmunds but I am sure he was not alive in 1881. Elizabeth Pearson may have died in 1875 but the age is not given so it may be someone else. I can find no register of her marraige let alone to a Mason, didn't like registering things much did they?

Montmorency

Montmorency Report 28 Jul 2005 09:29

in 1861 it says 'abt 1860' because Elizabeth's age is mistranscribed as 6 months, but on the image it's 1 month. You were allowed 6 weeks to register, which could run into the June quarter if she was around 1 month old on census night. The subdistrict they're living in is Myton, which is the same subdistrict as the registration on Yorkshire BMD And there are no Massons at all in the Hull BMDs around that time. So it's looking very likely that the Elizabeth Masson that Tracy's found is the same girl who's registered as Mason
