The bad bit is that the person we were doing the research for yesterday, or the day before (Olde Crone Marj Holden) turns out to be related to the REAL Rathbones. Lol Am leaving my symbols - sorry!!! MMM (I might remove my square if you tell me what your name means, Jess)!!

Vera , Sarah and I spent AGES hunting a family for someone. The chap had the middle name Rathbone amnd we assumed all sorts (mothers maiden name etc) It transpires ( as another researcher popped in and helpfully told us,) that Rathbone was a name that was used as a middle name because it was an 'important' name in the north of England and people wanted to be associated with this high class family, Rathbone. It gave us such a runaround, it has now become an 'in' joke, especially as we saw the name mentioned again last night and pulled the researchers name about their family wanting to appear important

P.S. I have been away from the site for some time - so, who is Rathbone and why should I run?? Ta, Vera

Hi everyone, I've given up with all your new names - but you all seem to be having fun...lol TIP - seeing that this is the Tips board - When sending messages can everyone please add some dates to names e.g. Fred 1920 Bloggs so that I (at least) know which Fred Bloggs you refer to on my tree. Thank you. Vera, Manchester

No No No No No!! NO symbols I have a thing about them blessed symbols. Some people spend AGES putting sillly symbols by there name and they are quite often the ...erm...erm...ones that haven't got a clue what they are looking for. I so often want to say 'if you put as much effort into research as you did your name , you'd get on better'' Not everyone but some. Perhaps i'd better delete that, or duck quickly! No No Not Derbyshire Dancer....very clever person

LOL Sarah! Actually, when I think about it, I had a lady contact me about a connection. She appeared in my inbox as June X, but when I went to my contacts to give her permission to view my tree, I couldn't find her. She did eventually turn up as June Y. So I take it the name in my inbox was her married name, and the one in my contacts was her maiden name I think! lol. They do like to make it complicated don't they! lol Jeanette x

Merry Report 10 Aug 2005 13:46

Thanks Jeanette - That's interesting then! The incoming message has Jeanette X (ie your surname) and on the contacts list it has Jeanette in East Yorkshire..... So yours is a different format to Jess - hers is the same in both places, but maybe she has entered the same in both married and maiden surname boxes and you have not!! Where is Jess anyway - I don't remember giving permission for her to go anywhere???? I think I will have a go with a less objectionable name! I wanted to be ''Montezuma's Revenge'', but if I write to people they will see ''Montezuma's Burchill'' (my maiden name) on the contacts list, which doesn't have the same ring to it somehow!! I could change both, but perhaps some wouldn't see the funny side (those who haven't been contaminated by these boards, that is!!) Happy Hunting - Sarah (Monty)

Sarah What happens if I message you? My birth name is the same as my surname (ie. I'm not married), but in the bit where it asks for birth name I have In East Yorkshire. Jeanette x
