Parallel thinking Merry. I was thinking that it was too much of a coincidence considering the family tie up with the children. Will send for the death cert. of Catherine and take it from there. Well Kate. I am bearing in mind your contribution re Sarah Jane Ord and Thomas Stokoe. Thanks! With everbody routing for me perhaps there is a light at the end of the tunnel that is just a candle at the moment.! Hoots the noo! Ken.

Doh Kate - that's my two fingered typing!! Henham in Essex is where some of my rellies come from, so my fingers can type that quite easily.......!! Funny how one single letter can take you 230 miles! Merry

Am I missing something, or are we just assuming that Sarah Jane Stokoe is the right one? I haven't seen anybody come up with a marriage reference for her as Sarah Jane Ord when she married Thomas Stokoe? Oh, sorry, 'Merry', I see you found it before but the district is Hexham, not Henham: Marriages Dec 1879 ------------------------------------------------------------------ CUMMINGS William Hexham 10b 418 Nicholson Margaret Ann Hexham 10b 418 Ord Sarah Jane Hexham 10b 418 STOKOE Thomas Hexham 10b 418 Kate.

Ken - The only thing I can think of for you to do is to order the Catherine Sinclair death cert via the GRO. This costs £7, but if you ask for a checking point of 'Wife of Hugh Sinclair' and this isn't on the cert then you get a partial refund (half roughly). Otherwise you are just going to go round in circles. For what it's worth, I feel fairly certain the birth cert you have IS for your father. Here's some reasoning: Hugh in Northumberland has the right two sons living with him in 1891 as he had when he was in scotland in 1881. There is no death for first wife Catherine in Scotland There is no possible birth reg for your father in Scotland (I think you said?) There is no sign of a possible Hugh and family in Scotland in 1891 and 1901. The marriage for Hugh to his third wife, back in Scotland, comes conveniently after the probably death of Sarah ''Sinclair'' (Ord/Stokoe) just after the 1901 census. Merry

Found a death for a Sarah Sinclair - does it help in any way Name: Sinclair, Sarah Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 50 Quarter: June Year: 1901 District: Newcastle upon Tyne County: Northumberland Volume: 10b Page: 12

Where is states Conside and Knitsley , Conside is misspelt it should be Consett as Knitsley is in Consett. This ties in with the other ones in Consett but it is getting more confusing by the minute. Ken.

Hi I don't know if this helps any (and you might already know) but on both Hugh Sinclair's death certificate in Perth in 1932 and His wife Amy's in 1931 the informant is shown as their son Thomas. On Amy's death certificate Thomas' address is shown as 4 Long Causeway Perth. Margaret

So, Ken It looks very likely that Thomas Stokoe and Sarah Jane Ord separated and both moved on to new relationships. Now then. Who would like Ken's challenge??? Who wants to phone up Newcastle and ask about this cert??? Name: SINCLAIR, Catherine Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 28 Quarter: September Year: 1885 District: Newcastle upon Tyne County: Northumberland Volume: 10b Page: 8 Ken doesn't want to risk getting the cert and it being the wrong one. She needs to be the WIFE of HUGH SINCLAIR.... Does anyone have any contact with this reg office and know if they are friendly?? Merry

Lavinia Stokoe appears to have children born before 1891, but when you go back, those two children ''appear'' to be her brother and sister and she is not Mrs Stokoe: Porteous, Ada abt 1884 Newcastle Upon Tyne Daughter Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, David abt 1843 Scotland Head Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, David abt 1883 Workington, Cumberland, England Son Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, Eliza A abt 1877 Hexham, Northumberland, England Daughter Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, Lavinia abt 1867 Carlisle, Cumberland, England Daughter Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, Margaret abt 1883 Workington, Cumberland, England Daughter Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, Mary J abt 1881 Hexham, Northumberland, England Daughter Conside and Knitsley Durham Porteous, Thomas abt 1859 Acomb, Northumberland, England Son Conside and Knitsley Durham Merry

My one and only comes from Northumberland and we have even been to Newcastle library and Registrars but didn't find anything. We are new to this and well past retiring age so finding it a bit difficult. Appreciate all your help everyone but feel like I am never going to find where Dad came from. Northumberland is on the North East Coast straight across from the Lake District Merry where the Roman Wall is. Ken. Bowed but not broken.

Found this info on ST John Lee, which might help track down Thomas Stokoe ST. JOHN LEE is a parish, comprising the townships of Acomb (West), Anick, Anick Grange, Bingfield, Cocklaw, Fallowfield, Hallington, Portgate, Sandhoe, and Wall. Hexham registration district 1871 census shows him, living with parents in Cocklaw

I wonder what happened to her first hubby (no obvious death reg that fits) I think perhaps he didn't die! (can anyone else find his death reg?) Does anyone know Northumberland?? On the 1891 and 1901 census returns there are several Thomas Stokoe's of the same age as Sarah's husband, but I can't match up the place of birth with the 1881 entry above, above above (would like to draw an arrow up!). Would explain why our Sarah Jane may not have married Hugh Sinclair. Sorry Ken if I'm making your father illegitimate at the mo :o(( Merry

I've looked for a marriage of Sarah Stokoe to Hugh Sinclair on 1837 from 1887 to 1892 and can't find one in these years, so if they did marry it must have been before 1887. Kath. x

Ken, I know you already asked about this death reg: Name: SINCLAIR, Catherine Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 28 Quarter: September Year: 1885 District: Newcastle upon Tyne County: Northumberland Volume: 10b Page: 8 Which for those of you who missed episode one, is a potential death reg for Hugh's first wife who he married in Scotland. If the death cert says this woman is married and the wife of Hugh then this would mean he was at least this side of the boarder (I'm writing from Dorset!) for some reason. Now, I know you didn't actually buy this cert - Can you remind me of what they did tell you at the reg office about it?? Merry

Obviously not a football nut, like me then Merry. Bob Stokoe was manager of Sunderland football team in the 1990s I think.

Think her first marriage is going to be 1879 Q4 in Hexham. One groom with two brides at the mo..... I'd never heard of the name Stokoe before - as you say Jess, millions! Mind you, I don't really know where Northumberland is, given a blank map of the UK.....ever played pin the tail to the donkey? UPDATE The entry for Thomas Stokoe is on FreeBMD but not yet on ancestry. 1879 Q4 Henham 10b 418 and her first names are Sarah Jane, like me lol DOUBLE UPDATE - the above should read Hexham, not Henham (what a wally!!)
