Rose, that is great. Yes, Haydock is so close, it could have been a house in between. Was this the David Davies who is listed as a bricklayer? Oswestry does ring bells. It jumps out as being in Shropshire, but of course the boarder has moved from time to time. I've spent quite a bit on various family tree related things just lately, so will have to leave it until at least next month to check these out. Will get back to you when I have the certificates. As for David Davies not being on the earlier census - there's a gap in the ages of the children, perhaps his work took him away from home from time to time. My Dad is sure there is a horse/ farming connection there somewhere, with Percy, George or David, but it hasn't shown up so far.

Haydock and Ashton are very close. 1871: 1871 England Census about David Davis Name: David Davis Age: 35 Estimated birth year: abt 1836 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Mary A Gender: Male Where born: Oswestry, Wales Civil parish: Birkenhead Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity Town: Birkenhead County/Island: Cheshire Country: England Registration district: Birkenhead Sub-registration district: Birkenhead ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 14 Household Members: Name Age Charles R Davis 5 David Davis 35 David Davis 3 Erna Davis 13 Harriet Davis 9 Joseph Davis 10 Mary A Davis 37 William H Davis 9 months I can't find David in 1861. It's possible he was Mary Ann's second husband. Rose

I've copied and printed your look ups, Rose and will research them myself (I like to see the original registers) and eventually order certificates. It's great to have George's mother's name and his parents ages. Gives me lots to go on - finding Mary Ann's maiden name and where she and David came from. Thanks again. Night!

Yes, it was Alice's birth place which has thrown me off the scent before, and David Davies being a bricklayer (that was the weakest part - I'd expected him to be a collier, or a horseman, or farmer/ dairyman). Haydock is so close to Burtonwood, it's possible that Alice herself didn't know her exact place of birth and chose a likely village. Her parents would have filled in the previous census.

Yes, it's falling into place.

Alice is listed as being born in Ashton in 1891 but Haydock in 1881. That matches with 1901. I found a George born Birkenhead in 1891 and 1881 and his father is David a bricklayer so that matches too. Rose

George was born in Birkenhead, not Percy. Rose

No, I'm talking rubbish again, Alice's elder sister's name was mary Ann, not their oldest child. Time for me to take a break!

Jacqueline Report 24 Mar 2007 21:08

George's mother is Mary Ann, and our George named his first child Mary Ann. It would certainly be worth going with this now and seeing what comes up on certificates. I must have looked at this, but the 'Birkenhead' just felt it was wrong - when it is one step nearer to Wales, and a short step from there to Wales. Thanks again, Rose.

Was Birkenhead in Cheshire? Could it have been Burtonwood, misheard?

Jacqueline Report 24 Mar 2007 21:00

Thank you Rose! I am not sure. There's a couple of other possibles I've found in 1901, but nothing which jumps out with a resounding 'YES', if you know what I mean. Birkenhead doesn't seem right, Percy had a strong Yorkshire accent, not a hint of Liverpool. I thought I could access these records for free, but have not been able to see where.

Thank you! Another pair of eyes would be great. Can't seem to work out which Alice and George Davies I should be looking at. It seems either they moved or George changed jobs. In the register, her father is listed as born in Aston, Lancs. with an 'h' added above, going between the s and the t. Her mother, Alice and all the older of the siblings are listed as from Ashton, Lancs. (her younger two siblings born in Burtonwood, where her son Percy was later born.) On a modern map, Ashton, Lancs is Ashton-under-lyne, Tameside, near Oldham. (One of the boarders living with them in 1891 was born in Oldham.)

You're right, Ozi, I am hooked! Have got in touch with quite a few relatives (mainly on Dad's side) through gr too. I'm just looking at what I've got. Percy Davies' father was called George Thomas Davies (a collier/ coal miner) and his grandfather was a bricklayer called David Davies. I've no idea where from, though - could be Wales, or England. George Thomas Davies married Alice Fearnley Dec 29th, 1894, he was aged 22 (She was 21). I have found Alice's family in Burtonwood in 1891. I've found Alice's birth register, so can order her birth certificate. Another thread about occupations helped to work out that Alice and her older sisters were Coal Pit Brow lasses, while her younger siblings were at school. I still don't know why Percy went from Burtonwood to Thryburgh, who his siblings were, where George and Alice were in 1901 (am abouts to go and have another look) or anything about David Davies. I know there is a Welsh connection and the Davies family came from Wales, but not when or where. So that't Mum's side of the family. Somebody did ask! Thanks again to Trisha, Monty and all for getting me started.

Jacqueline, Why not add the details you have of the Davies? Perhaps we can help. Rose
