I found one relative indexed under her married name when she married for the second time but not her maiden name, waiting for certificate to see if the maiden name was give.

Ive been trawling 1837 along with the person I'm helping looking for births,I wanted to be sure that there were none because 2 had been found that had the mothers second surname, but the fathers surname is very common,so it looks like they were coincidences. Thanks bernice.

I think the easiest answer is :- What does it matter, as long as you get the correct certificate? Kath. x

Ok just to upset the status quo I have a tale of my two Grannies. Granny 1 Widowed- Re-marries in 1972 marraige entry show under her married name of Crutchley not her maiden name Waterfield. Granny 2 Divorced - Re-marries in 1965 marriage entry is under her 1st married name of Smith not under her maiden name. Perhaps it depended which name they used for everyday use? Pippa

If the marriage cert declares both surnames the GRO indexers are obliged to index both! merry

The Ego Report 21 Oct 2005 23:47

Its definitely the same couple ,but i'm trying to establish wether the double entry is the result of some reregistration or discovery that she declared the wrong surname first. The marriage cert declares both names, but why have the entry doubled?

Merry

Merry Report 21 Oct 2005 23:45

Oh Alter, you've added to it!! Yes I think if you were to get the marriage cert it would show both names for the bride.......Not like mine where they didn't ask for my maiden name....... Different registrar/different questions. The GRO indexers are obliged to index every name quoted in the ''Name and Surname'' boxes. Merry

LOL Jess......!! (that is how I felt, too!) Pity I don't understand Alter's latest post!! Maybe it's the wine? I think I'll come back in the morning!! Merry

I'd say it probably means that two Bloggs people (possibly brothers or sisters) both married on the same day, one to a Smith and one to a Harrison. Could be wrong though!! UPDATE - Just re-read what you've written, and perhaps it's just that she had used both names on the register and the registrar wasn't sure which one to use, so put them down as separate entries just in case he got it wrong. It sounds right to me! Lets just check! Pippa

OK Thanks thats clear now........................ Now- is it normal to have a marriage registered like this on 1837?.......... Bloggs Fields 66a 543 >>> fields is her maiden name Bloggs harrison 66a 543 >>>harrison is her first married name (this was the entry for her second marriage-one under the other on the sheet)

Merry Report 21 Oct 2005 23:27

Ah!! I have been married twice. Children from second marriage are recorded with the maiden surname of the mother (me!). That's all.....No mention of my other married name. Merry

Pippa

Pippa Report 21 Oct 2005 23:25

Maiden name! GRO index shows SMITH as maiden name. It is the one she was born with! Pippa PS If you are that desperate you can always look up my birth!

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 21 Oct 2005 23:23

I think you should always get the original maiden name. After all the column is called 'mother's maiden name' and not 'previous name'. Kath. x

The Ego

The Ego Report 21 Oct 2005 23:21

My head hurts..........thought this would be simple. I'll try another way of asking..........in the 1837 site, when looking for a birth in say the 1960's or 1970's when it has the maiden name for the mother of said child,is it always her original maiden name before a first marriage or has it been known that the first married surname is used instead (in the event of said child being born during her second marriage) just as kath said !!!........

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 21 Oct 2005 23:16

I think Alter is looking for a birth reference in more recent times when mother's maiden name is in the indexes. If the mother has been married twice Alter wants to know whether the maiden name will be given in the index or the first married name. Think that's right anyway. I have a relative who is in the same situation as Pippa, and mother's correct maiden name is given on first registration under the first husband's surname, and again when re-registered under second husband's name Kath. x

Pippa

Pippa Report 21 Oct 2005 23:15

well....... technically I was born during her first to hubby number one but hubby number two was my Dad. It's not as bad as it sounds they were separated but couldn't afford the divorce. My parents were married 2 days before my sixteenth birthday and I was re-registered and both GRO entries state my mother's maiden name as Smith - which is correct. Pippa
