I'd say it probably means that two Bloggs people (possibly brothers or sisters) both married on the same day, one to a Smith and one to a Harrison. Could be wrong though!! UPDATE - Just re-read what you've written, and perhaps it's just that she had used both names on the register and the registrar wasn't sure which one to use, so put them down as separate entries just in case he got it wrong. Oh Alter, you've added to it!! Yes I think if you were to get the marriage cert it would show both names for the bride.......Not like mine where they didn't ask for my maiden name....... Different registrar/different questions. The GRO indexers are obliged to index every name quoted in the ''Name and Surname'' boxes. Merry

Its definitely the same couple ,but i'm trying to establish wether the double entry is the result of some reregistration or discovery that she declared the wrong surname first.The marriage cert declares both names,but why have the entry doubled?

Ok just to upset the status quo I have a tale of my two Grannies. Granny 1 Widowed- Re-marries in 1972 marraige entry show under her married name of Crutchley not her maiden name Waterfield. Granny 2 Divorced - Re-marries in 1965 marriage entry is under her 1st married name of Smith not under her maiden name. Perhaps it depended which name they used for everyday use? Pippa

I think the easiest answer is :- What does it matter, as long as you get the correct certificate? Kath. x

Ive been trawling 1837 along with the person I'm helping looking for births,I wanted to be sure that there were none because 2 had been found that had the mothers second surname,but the fathers surname is very common,so it looks like they were coincidences. Thanks bernice.

i would say having brought over 300 certs, expect anything, wrong name right name even made up names.

I found one relative indexed under her married name when she married for the second time but not her maiden name, waiting for certificate to see if the maiden name was give.
