Evening all-just need something clarifying-if a woman marries for the second time ,is her original maiden name declared or previous married name? when having kids in second marriage-were talking the 1960's and 1970's.This person had both maiden name and past married name listed under the same reference when getting married for the second time.

On the ones I have she had her first married named and in condition it had Widow but her father had her maiden name. One her childrens birth cert it had her married name then firstmarried name then maiden name. make sense!!!! thought not

Yes !! my grt gran was married 3 times!!. on her second marriage it states her previous name(the first marriage) & her maiden name. HOWEVER when she remarried the 3rd time it only stated her former married name, no mention of the first married name or her maiden name. Shirley

So on 1837.......... If a lady called vera smith marries a john fields and later marries a david harrison,will the child from the harrison marriage (2nd one) be declared as... Harrison childs name Smith.......or Harrison childs name Fields.

My second marriage cert says for instance... Jesicca Brown Formerly Grey Nee Green

sorry people but none of this has answered the question re the 1837 site with regards the sheet info. not on about the certs the site-original maiden name or previous married surname for the new child??

My great grandmother married twice and used her maiden name both times (however, until I prove otherwise the second time MAY have been bigamously).

On my birth ref my mum is listed correctly with her maiden name as Smith. If that helps? Pippa

Not quite sure what you are asking. Do you mean you are looking for the birth reference for a child from the second marriage? I think it will still give the woman's maiden name in the maiden name column. Kath. x

I have several second marriages (widows and divorcees) on my tree and all indexing is under the last known surname. (19th and 20thC) My own second marriage cert has no mention of my maiden name except for dad being on it. I am indexed under my first married name. Some people might marry for a second time using their maiden name, but I'm sure it's not the norm, even today. You lost me on the kids bit! Merry

well....... technically I was born during her first to hubby number one but hubby number two was my Dad. It's not as bad as it sounds they were separated but couldn't afford the divorce. My parents were married 2 days before my sixteenth birthday and I was re-registered and both GRO entries state my mother's maiden name as Smith - which is correct. Pippa

I think Alter is looking for a birth reference in more recent times when mother's maiden name is in the indexes. If the mother has been married twice Alter wants to know whether the maiden name will be given in the index or the first married name. Think that's right anyway. I have a relative who is in the same situation as Pippa, and mother's correct maiden name is given on first registration under the first husband's surname, and again when re-registered under second husband's name Kath. x

My head hurts..........thought this would be simple. I'll try another way of asking..........in the 1837 site,when looking for a birth in say the 1960's or 1970's when it has the maiden name for the mother of said child,is it always her original maiden name before a first marriage or has it been known that the first married surname is used instead (in the event of said child being born during her second marriage) just as kath said !!!........

I think you should always get the original maiden name. After all the column is called 'mother's maiden name' and not 'previous name'. Kath. x

Maiden name! GRO index shows SMITH as maiden name. It is the one she was born with! Pippa PS If you are that desperate you can always look up my birth!

Ah!! I have been married twice. Children from second marriage are recorded with the maiden surname of the mother (me!). That's all.....No mention of my other married name. Merry
