In preparation for my first visit to Shropshire Archives, I have been doing my homework and reading the useful information on their website. This is a quote from their on-line leaflet about the transcripts and indexes they have: “Part of the IGI also appears on the website at www.familysearch.org. Due to licensing laws the information on the website is only 1/3 of that available on CD Rom. This is rotated over a 2-6 week cycle.” Tina

Well I never! That explains a lot then - I am not going mad for a start. Have often hunted for something I had previously found, only to think I must have imagined it! And often found stuff that definitely wasnt there the last million times I looked.... Olde Crone

I have been looking at IGI for a relative and I was sure I'd searched him before and then lo and behold he turned up the other night on IGI. giving christening, father and mother so I have now sent for his birth cert after checking on '1837' Perhaps if I recheck others every couple of weeks they may eventually turn up! Will have to check more often now we know this. Thanks for letting us know. Just goes to show that no one reads all the info on these sites lol. Julie

I wondered about that bit about the licensing laws, too, Nell. I can only think it is something to do with the fact that people appearing and disappearing from the IGI, apparantly completely at random, sends us straight for the nearest bottle! Seriously though, I had assumed that the Mormon Church owned the rights to both the CDs they sell and to what is on their website. Maybe they sold off the rights to produce and sell the CDs and hence are limited in respect of making the same information available, for free, on their website all at the same time. Don't know - just a guess. Tina

Hi Tina, I was also told this when I went to the Shropshire Archives. I had always had problems with seeing things on the IGI once and not being able to find it again. Its nice when someone tells you that you are not going totally doolally though lol! Wilf :-)

Thanks from another person who thought she was going crazy, knowing I had seen the information on IGI but then not finding it again and having to do some serious re-thinking of where I had seen it - if you get my drift.

Hi Dave Yes, I have been pondering about the Hugh Wallis site too, but I cannot see how that would make any difference to the situation. The Hugh Wallis site does not hold the IGI information itself, it is really just a tool for sorting the information which is on the IGI site into the parishes in which you are really interested. It gives you the correct batch number but, crucially, then takes you back into the Mormon site but with a more finely tuned search. So I don't think that the Hugh Wallis site solves it at all - one will still only access the information that is 'live' on the IGI at the time one is searching. Tina
