That's one I found, but wasn't sure of. There seem to have been a few Mayall families around. I was just thinking that maybe Elizabeth/Sarah and James didn't marry at all, or married later - possibly Elizabeth/Sarah's 1st husband was still around somewhere. In that case the children might have been registered as Mayall (though I couldn't find them either on Freebmd, but they might be on 1837online). It was quite possible for couples to pretend to be married on the census. Alternatively - and I've obviously been watching too many far-fetched films, perhaps Sarah and Elizabeth were twin sisters, one good and one bad and the bad one bumped off the good one!!!! nell

Nell, No I don't, I even tried looking for a marriage using Elizabeth/Sarah Mayall, the only Arthur I can find is in Mossley with an Ellen Mayall and a Sarah Ann age 7 months, living as boarders,

Hi Jim Well! Why on earth can I not have a more ' distinctive' name to work with? I had always thought that they married before then because Elizabeth/Sarah was listed as Shaw in 1891, maybe not though?

Hi Nell No I don't as I have no idea if she is Elizabeth or Sarah and naturally there are entries for both,

Hi Nell, I have absolutely no idea, I thought that I had traced Harold's Dad James back to Ashton Under Lyne born in 1858, based on 1901 census info, had the same job and could only find two entries for James Shaw, kind of process of elimination! James dad being Hiram Shaw from Mossely also but written as Iram! Where on earth do I go from here?

Just looked on streetmap uk and I see just above Mossley is Lydgate, where Ada's birthplace is, so I think the Ashton one more likely. Maybe they just weren't registered, or there was some problem in registration. Do you have James and Elizabeth's marriage cert? nell

I know Mossley is near Ashton under Lyne, but do you think it possible that the children born Mossley, Lancs were actually born Mossley Hill, a suburb of Liverpool? nell

Got them - Harold is abbreviated which is why he didn't appear on index! Hi Nell In 1891 mum is Elizabeth born in Glasgow and still the right age, there is Frank born in 1888 and her son Arthur age 16, Ada and Harold age 9 and 7 respectively. I did find an entry for Frank age 8 years that died in 1896 as he isn't on the 1901 census, maybe?

Hi again Nell, Thanks for looking for me, I just can't see a way around this one! I do know that in 1901 the family were in Heywood and figured if I worked with what is for definate..... like his marriage certificate and traced back his Dad from occupation, age and place of birth, but am really banging my head on this. This is why I wondered if maybe the births were registered in Saddleworth (probably unlikely) but it is the only place that ties in with all tree children in the respective birth years? the last piece of my puzzle....... thanks again Lisa
