Hi again Nell!! Have Elizabeth's sisters birth certificate, which has mothers christian and maiden name, and fathers name and profession and their address (which matched up to where they lived on the census) Their child has the same info so am sure that they are the correct certificates! BUT (guess what?) cannot find Elizabeths parents marriage either! DOH! This lot have been an absolute (expensive) pain! Think I will have to visit the records office, and see what I can find! Thanks again!! Kim X

An Olde Crone Report 27 Nov 2005 21:25

You have almost certain ly already considered this, but here goes: The Cornish spelling of Curnow is KERNOW. And - Cornish Records have been excellently and exhaustively transcribed by various Cornish enthusiasts, the most notable being the Cornwall OPC. I am not sure if they are on-line, perhaps someone else knows? Olde Crone

KimKat - how does Bill know? Have you asked him that? :-)

Thanks Marjorie! Kernow is indeed Cornish for Cornwall, but have never come across that spelling for a name! However!! Saying that - today I think I found my elusive William Curnow (father of my Elizabeth Jane GtGt Granny who also married a Curnow) William (1824 c) as I mentioned earlier, has not been found in any census! On the 1861 census, his wife and family are living in Camborne, and it says 'husband due in County soon' Have trawled everywhere looking for him - then I found him on a Ship, in Cornwall, called The Cambridge, which I googled and found was a training ship - with gunners etc on it! He was transcribed as William Kernow! Private! Don't know if hes my William - he is born in the right place (Crowan) and is the correct age! Could anyone tell me whether it would be possible for a copper miner in 1860 to suddenly become a Private on a war ship a year later? Sorry to ramble on!! Kim X Joy - He got the info from the 1841/51 census, before I had access to them! Im still not convinced though!!

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 29 Nov 2005 00:13

Well, my imagination is going into overdrive now - wonder if your rellie was involved in the 'Disturbances' at the Mines and rather than wait to be arrested, he decided to take to the waves! Seriously, I would never be surprised at any Cornishman, whatever his profession, suddenly appearing aboard ship - the sea is in their blood and I expect it made a nice change from being underground in stifling heat/cold for 14 hours a day, only to find that the Mine Captain had cut the wages yet again. Uuummm - a Training Ship, though - erm, it wasn't a punishment ship, was it? Olde Crone

LOL Olde Crone!! Hopefully i may have found an interesting ancestor at long last! He was definately a dodgy one! Only to be found on the birth certificate of one daughter? Unless he was a figment of his 'wifes' imagination? I was thinking more 'Smuggler/Wrecker type' Much more romantic than a communistic trouble causing miner methinks!! ;o))) Kim XX
