Thanks for your pm. Most of the information that has been given to you has come from Ancestry - from census lookups. If you are new to this I would highly recommend you ask for an Ancestry subscription for a Christmas present - personally I dont think you can manage without it. Right so we have Matthew Hewertson bc1847 married to Martha b 1851 children Sarah bc1875 Charles bc1880 Ernest b c1884 Arthur b c1887 Frederick bc1873 John William b c1871 Matthew b 1878 Now you want to find the parents of Matthew and Martha. The safest way of doing this is to order certificates. A marriage certificate will show the address for the couple when they married, age at marriage, fathers names and occupations, place of marriage and names of witnesses. Birth certificates will show the date and place of birth, fathers name and occupation, mothers name (and maiden name) You can then start to trace them back in the census (on Ancestry) You can see that I posted a reply concerning the possible parents of Matthew - taken from the 1851 census. Birth certificates can be ordered from the GRO at 7 pound a time but you do need to know the GRO reference no. These can sometimes be found on BMD - website http://freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com/ - remove brackets - or on the ancestry web site. If you can´t find them yourself then post a message on the boards - someone will always give you a hand to look them up. One thing you must always bear in mind is that don´t go back a generation until you are really sure you have the right person/people. It´s very easy to presume that you may have the right ancestor - take for example the message I posted for you re Martha Hulme. I thought I may have found her on the 1861 census, with parents Mary and Oliver. I then found another entry on the IGI with parents Samuel and Hannah - this one looks more likely as she was born in Knutsford, which ties in with the later censuses (or is it censi ?) By getting Martha´s marriage certificate to Matthew you will find out the name of her father. Don´t be afraid to post messages on the boards - there are so many helpful people out there who are only willing to help and advise. Good luck with your research. Elaine

certificates can be ordered on line from http://www.gro(.)gov(.)uk/gro/content/ - remove brackets Cost 7 pounds each, providing you give the GRO reference. Didn´t quite understand your last message - whose father could have been William Arthur Marshall

Suzanne

Thank you Elaine, this is amazing, I know that his Father could have been William Arthur Marshall who was the 6th Chief Constable of Salford/Manchester. Have no idea about his mother apart from what you told me and no family to ask, so maybe the next step is birth certificates. Where do i order them from?

Trying to trace Matthew´s wife - Martha Hulme This is the only one I can find in 1861 census, Martha´s place of birth given as Dukinfield. On later census place of birth given as Knutsford. I don´t know whether these places are near each other - someone may be able to help on this. Therefore this is only a possible Agnes Hulme abt 1856 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Daughter Dukinfield Lancashire George Hulme abt 1854 Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire John Hulme abt 1858 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire *** Martha Hulme abt 1851 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Daughter Dukinfield Lancashire Mary Hulme abt 1829 Marple, Cheshire, England Wife Dukinfield Lancashire Oliver Hulme abt 1828 Hyde, Cheshire, England Head Dukinfield Lancashire Source information: RG9/2996 Registration district: Ashton Under Lyne Sub-registration district: Dukinfield ED, institution, or vessel: 19 Folio: 75 Page: 2 I have just found this on the IGI - gives parents as Samuel and Hannah - so this is another possibility. MARTHA HULME Female Event(s): Birth: Christening: 27 MAY 1849 St John'S, Knutsford, Cheshire, England Death: Burial: Parents: Father: SAMUEL Family Mother: HANNAH HULME in which case this is her on the 1851census 1851 census Ellen Hulme abt 1846 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire Hannah Hulme abt 1809 Plumbley, Cheshire, England Head Nether Knutsford Cheshire Hannah Hulme abt 1840 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire Maria Hulme abt 1844 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire *** Martha Hulme abt 1849 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire Wm Hulme abt 1831 Tabley, Cheshire, England Son Nether Knutsford Cheshire You´ll have to start investing in some certificates to sort out the right ones!!

From BMD - this appears to be Matthews birth. If you ordered his birth certificate you would find his mother´s maiden name. Hewertson, Matthew Marshall Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1845 District: Manchester (1837-1924) County: Lancashire Volume: 20 Page: 761
