I am new to all this, I have managed to navigate my way round the 1901 census, but where are all the others and how do I access them and do I have to pay? Thanks

Georgina

Georgina Report 28 Nov 2005 10:12

Hi Suzanne the 1881 census is free on the familysearch site. The others from 1851-1901 you will have to pay for. There are some counties free online (just google the county you are looking for) People on here are very helpful if you post the names and dates (as much info as possible) you may get look-ups from GR members. From BMD - this appears to be Matthews birth. If you ordered his birth certificate you would find his mother´s maiden name. Hewertson, Matthew Marshall Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1845 District: Manchester (1837-1924) County: Lancashire Volume: 20 Page: 761

Trying to trace Matthew´s wife - Martha Hulme This is the only one I can find in 1861 census, Martha´s place of birth given as Dukinfield. On later census place of birth given as Knutsford. I don´t know whether these places are near each other - someone may be able to help on this. Therefore this is only a possible Agnes Hulme abt 1856 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Daughter Dukinfield Lancashire George Hulme abt 1854 Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire John Hulme abt 1858 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Son Dukinfield Lancashire *** Martha Hulme abt 1851 Dukinfield, Cheshire, England Daughter Dukinfield Lancashire Mary Hulme abt 1829 Marple, Cheshire, England Wife Dukinfield Lancashire Oliver Hulme abt 1828 Hyde, Cheshire, England Head Dukinfield Lancashire Source information: RG9/2996 Registration district: Ashton Under Lyne Sub-registration district: Dukinfield ED, institution, or vessel: 19 Folio: 75 Page: 2 I have just found this on the IGI - gives parents as Samuel and Hannah - so this is another possibility. MARTHA HULME Female Event(s): Birth: Christening: 27 MAY 1849 St John'S, Knutsford, Cheshire, England Death: Burial: Parents: Father: SAMUEL Family Mother: HANNAH HULME in which case this is her on the 1851census 1851 census Ellen Hulme abt 1846 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire Hannah Hulme abt 1809 Plumbley, Cheshire, England Head Nether Knutsford Cheshire Hannah Hulme abt 1840 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire Maria Hulme abt 1844 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire *** Martha Hulme abt 1849 N Knutsford, Cheshire, England Daughter Nether Knutsford Cheshire Wm Hulme abt 1831 Tabley, Cheshire, England Son Nether Knutsford Cheshire You´ll have to start investing in some certificates to sort out the right ones!!

Thank you Elaine, this is amazing, I know that his Father could have been William Arthur Marshall who was the 6th Chief Constable of Salford/Manchester. Have no idea about his mother apart from what you told me and no family to ask, so maybe the next step is birth certificates. Where do i order them from?

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Nov 2005 12:07

certificates can be ordered on line from http://www.gro(.)gov(.)uk/gro/content/ - remove brackets Cost 7 pounds each, providing you give the GRO reference. Didn´t quite understand your last message - whose father could have been William Arthur Marshall
