Probably yes, I suppose, but worth asking, just in case... Have you tried the IGI - remembering what's been said on one of these threads: that they cycle the database over a period, so what isn't there now, may be in a couple of weeks' time and vice versa. Christine

Hi Helen, thanks for the reply. My cousin and myself have gone through every parish in Hanley s-o-t and we can't find a baptisam for him. On the 1871 census he's 6 and it say born in Hanley. on the next 3 census it say born in Hanley. I have a cert for an older brother and that's Hanley. Just don't know were to go from here. Gill

Gill Unfortunately the public cannot look in the register office records:-( Thre seems to be a wide range of service from register offices. Some of them are incredibly helpful and respond by return of post, and offer online ordering. Others, including several London ones, refuse to provide any certs for genealogy purposes. How big a time span are you looking at? Is it possible for you to find a baptism record to narrow down your search? How certain are you about where he was born? nell

Hi all, been looking for my grt grandfathers birth for about 5years no luck. Talking to a lady from the bmhs and she surggested i ask the registrar to look in the register not the index for his birth, she said she had the same problem with one of her rellies and they found her in the reg but she hadn't been indexed. Sent off last week for the cert taking her advice,it came back 2 days later, not possable to look in register to time consuming. Rang up the next day, to ask if i could look myself but but no, public arn't allowed to look at the register. Does anyone know anything about this? Gill
