I have just read the new rules and it seems that GR claim rights to all our material.........is that how everyone else sees it? .....so they can sell the GR company to the TV companies and transmit our family trees without our permission, we have no right to appeal on what has been broadcast or they can sell on our tree info to folks paying a fee for their branch of it? They can write a book without acknowledging that it is our work? Is that how anyone else reads it? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- here's the GR rules info: - By submitting any material to the content to the Genes Reunited Service, you: grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, non-terminable licence to copy, modify, distribute, show in public and create derivative works from that material in any form, anywhere; and authorise us to adapt the relevant material in the course of doing so, and so waive your moral rights to object to any derogatory treatment, or to be identified as the author, of the material in question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I am wondering about how much info to put in my tree now. What does anyone think? Tina

Do you read it the same way? Tina

It's a standard disclaimer for any forum. If you post on it, and they like what they read, you are giving them (in effect) permission to use what you write. It waives your copyright to it.

Thanks for that, I think I will keep my family records in a different format then, I'll just put up the names and dates of birth from now on. Tina

Yes, I think I may trawl mine and take out all the notes too.

Hi, I can see that a forum where people are posting ideas, comments etc; might be of interest to them if you`re indiscreet. However, having your tree with your rellies on this websit does not give carte blanche to anyone else to filch and use that info as they see fit, surely. I don`t think really they could get enough of interest from just trees as such . BUT: I`m certainly going to be careful what info I post re me , my family and my rellies from now on. Sounds like Big Brother is watching and it makes me feel uncomfortable. The site won`t be such fun from now on if we`re all having to watch what we say, just in case. Jay

.........this is the worst bit that I find hard to understand ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ and so waive your moral rights to object to any derogatory treatment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- to me it sounds as if they can re-write my family history with all kinds of derogatory comments that I have no right to object to or to correct. If that is the case, GR can show our trees to anybody, why bother making people ask permission to view-why don't they just flash them up between adverts!

'and so waive your moral rights to object to any derogatory treatment.' What is 'derogatory treatment', exactly? I take it we retain legal rights to object to it. Lots of people have living rellies here (with permission) who must still retain all their rights, because they didn't sign up, yet would potentially be affected by any decision GR makes to use the information on our trees.

Hmmm..that gives me a dilema! I don't like the idea of them being able to use all my research and info and was about to delete my tree. On the other hand, I have made contact with quite a few distant relatives on here, simply because they saw a name in my tree. If my tree isn't here, I won't get any more contact! Sam x

Christina Out of interest where did you find these rules? I was wondering if they are in an easy to find place. Bit worrying as I am reading it same way too :-( Pat x

Not sure exactly what this means, but I don't see that anyone has copyright over a family tree - after all the information to make a tree, certs and censuses, etc are in the public domain. But its twaddle about the derogatory bit, I am sure. Sounds like a kind of catch-all to ensure we don't sue. nell

I seriously think it is time to move our information to a safer place-I stupidly deleted mine and had to start all over again-moment of blind panic-cos I gave an undesireable permission to view my tree-now apparently GR tells us the world and his wife can see it-if that is their desire. Something wrong here, terribly wrong. I would absolutley hate that undesireable person find herself in a position to see my tree-I think it is time to put it on floppy disc and file it away for safe keeping.

I have gone looking for where these rules are and found them on the homepage at the bottom. After reading them again I feel like taking the few people I have on here off. :-( Margaret is it possible you could explain to me how your friend did that as I would still like people to contact me about some of my names but I really am so rubbish at understanding these different programmes and how to work them. what has happened to our privacy rights?

Malcolm

Malcolm Report 4 Jan 2006 23:03

well i dont quite know if this means they can do as they see fit or not BUT something i do know is that going back to mid 2005 whilst searching my family name BLATCHLEY i noticed that parts of e mails i had sent to other members had been copied to these sites on google maybe just maybe people had complained about this and GR have updated their rules to close a loophole although didnt i hear somewhere GR had sold this site to ITV ????????? malc

Pat

Pat Report 4 Jan 2006 23:12

Thank you very much Margaret it is kind of you, I shall be trying to take the few I have on here off as I am not happy with the wording, which looks to me like we have lost all rights to our own Family Tree :-( Does anyone else think this is since ITV has bought Genes? It does say New on both Terms & Conditions and GR Policy sections? Pat x

Hi, Not wanting to intrude, but I was just on the site doing my tree and noticed this thread. There is no need to worry. Genes Reunited never shows your tree to anyone unless you have given that member permission. And we never advertise a tree or any of its content unless we seek your permission - and then we only contact people who have written in to us with their success story. Your data is safe on the site - we protect it with high security and technology systems, so, speaking as someone who has ruined my computer with a spilt cup of coffee before now- it is safer on the website than on your PC! Apologies for intruding. Have a good evening. Martine (works for Genes).
