You beat me to it Georgina. It's a bit like saying do you know the Smith family in the London area! And surely, you'd have more luck posting on the 'trying to find' board... And no, I don't know any Donlans, in the Derby area or otherwise :-)

Merry

Merry Report 5 Jan 2006 10:15

There are only a dozen or so Donlan's associated with Derbyshire on each census, but this is a false figure as some of them should appear on several censuses, but don't!! More names and dates please. There are 25 civil registrations for the name in Derbyshire, 1837-abt 1910 (not complete listings) Merry

Louise Joseph Donlan is only 5 in 1901 (if he is yours) so you would have to buy credits on 1837 online and trawl through to find a marriage for him. This is the family of the only Joseph Donlan in 1901...... Ann Donlan abt 1857 Duffield, Derbyshire, England Wife Derby Derbyshire Annie Donlan abt 1884 Derby, Derbyshire, England Visitor Derby Derbyshire Ellen Donlan Not Known, Derbyshire, England Wife Conisbrough Yorkshire Florence Donlan abt 1894 Derby, Derbyshire, England Daughter Derby Derbyshire John Donlan abt 1889 Derby, Derbyshire, England Son Derby Derbyshire Joseph Donlan abt 1896 Derby, Derbyshire, England Son Derby Derbyshire May Donlan abt 1884 Derby, Derbyshire, England Daughter Derby Derbyshire Thomas Donlan abt 1857 Derby, Derbyshire, England Head Derby Derbyshire Thomas Donlan abt 1891 Derby, Derbyshire, England Son Derby Derbyshire Georgina.

So if Joseph Donlan who married Muriel was your granddad, is/was one of the children you mentioned your parent?? If so, which one is your parent - Janice, Tomas (Thomas ??) or Willam?? Do you know your parent's date of birth?? Do you know if Joseph and/or Muriel are still alive?? If not, do you know when they died?? Merry

Merry

Merry Report 5 Jan 2006 11:19

Could this be Muriel's death? Name: Muriel Ellen Donlan Death Year: [1986] Age: 63 Birth Date: 7 May 1922 Death Registration Month/Year: Jan 1986 Registration District: Derby Inferred County: Derbyshire Inferred Country: England ie died in 1986 aged 63 in Derbyshire? Merry

And what about this one for Joseph?? Name: Joseph Donlan Death Year: [1988] Age: 67 Birth Date: 19 Nov 1920 Death Registration Month/Year: Sep 1988 Registration District: Derby Inferred County: Derbyshire Inferred Country: England ie died 1988 aged 67 in Derbyshire?? If this is your rellie then (unless he was born in Ireland) we should be able to take his line back further...... Merry

Merry Report 5 Jan 2006 11:32

I forgot to say......If Muriel is dead and died between 1984 and 2001 the the death I found is the only one! Am wondering though..........You make it sound as if Muriel wasn't your grandmother?? (only married to your grandfather......) If she didn't have his surname when she died then obviously this death (above) won't be the right one..... Merry

Merry Report 5 Jan 2006 11:44

Doh.....Just noticed you speak of your granddad in the present tense, so is he still alive?? Merry

Merry I think Louise is very new to this. I explained to her how to post a reply to her thread but she must have misunderstood and posted her reply in the heading. Georgina.

There are a lot of real newbies on here at the mo, I think.........It's really difficult to get across how they need to respond and/or read what we have written.............. I have tried various personal messages, but don't seem to be able to help them to do it!! I shall have no hair by the time ''Who do you think you are??'' gets going!!! (that's even without burning it all off, for those of you who read that on Christmas day!) Merry

To find Muriel's maiden name (as you mentioned this in a personal message) you would have to look fer the marriage of Joseph Donlan in the Derby area around the time of your mum's birth, if she was the eldest, or earlier if her brothers were older. (it's not always easy to guess when people married!!). There's no easy way to find this, except trawling through the GRO indexes......Do you know what they are and where you can find them?? Merry
