You've all been fabulous - I am now fairly convinced that the name is QUIRKE. Thank you very much. Now I am looking for my William Rushton (b abt 1814) and Mary Ann Quirk(e) born abt 1822, both in Liverpool. She's been holding me up for far too long and hopefully I'll make some quick progress - thank you all for your help. Andy

I can confirm that when I was at school (I can just remember that far back) in the 1950s, a capital Q was written in roundhand like a letter L. Some of the script fonts (e.g. Commercial Script) will still show this. Jim PS - I remember the original Andy Pandy as well. Happy hunting Jim

Jim - it looks like this may have been cracked! Nice one. She was holding up my research as William Rushton was a bit too common a name, but now hopefully I can go further back. Thanks for your help! Andy

I thought the name was Luike. The first letter looks like an L but then again, I have no idea how Q has been written down the years. William T Rushton (the eldest child) was born in Scotby. Both William (the father) and Mary Ann were from Liverpool though. Mary Ann whateverhernameis! was born abt 1822 (from 1881 census). I like the idea of Quirke if it is a Q. The certificate is a bad copy, so it isn't just the scan, sorry. Thanks for your help so far. Andy

Sorry Dea et al, I have sent an email but didn't realise how large the file was - 10mb!! So it is still in my Symantec Email Scanner being checked. Now, rather than send an individual email to everyone (and so risk blocking my little system) I want to send one email to a number of addresses. Hopefully you'll have it within a few minutes, sorry for the delay. Andy

Zoe

Zoe Report 7 Jan 2006 20:20

Andy you may as well send it to everyone that has offered and see what they can make from it and when others offer then send them it, that way quite a few people will be looking at it Zoe x
