Just to add my two penn'orth. The daughter is old enough to be in service, in which case her birthplace could be London, unknown etc. The son would probably still be with his mother, but if the family split up, they might be in the workhouse.

OK. In 1851 Mary was a lodge with Anne Sperring in Lympsham, Somerset. Despite being only 15, she is described as a nurse. Anne was 85, a pauper and agricultural labourers widow. Still looking - watch this space! Ian

Do you have any idea where in Somerset Mary was born? There is a Mary Sperring b Loxton, Somerset, in 1835 on the IGI. COuld that be her? If so, it's just another clue. Ian

thank you all very much I was surprised to see all the replies this morning I will check to see if she did indeed remarry under her maiden name which was Sperring , Emily did not die then she got married in 1877 .I do have all of them on 1861 but not after that only him on 1871 and 1891and cannot find the children after 1861

I would just say Val, I found a chap all on his own listed as Head in ancestry's transcription. I knew he had a wodge of kids and wondered if he was the right chap. I checked the image and found he was first on a page, so clicked to see the previous image - and there was the wife and half a dozen kids. Mistakes can happen, so always look at the image, particularly if the name is at the very beginning or very end of the census page.

I take it you have the 1861 census info. Do you know Marys maiden name? She may have reverted to it if she left her hubby. If she remarried, there are 3 Mary kemps in family rels married between 1866 - 1871. It would also be worth checking to see if she remarried under her maiden name. As she doesn't appear on the 1871 under Kemp, with the children with her, it is probable that she is using another surname. Free BMD: 1857 Hedges Sarah Anne St Giles 1b 417 Hodges Sarah Anne St Giles 1b 417 Kemp Jefse St. Giles 1b 417 Snewin Frederick Peter St. Giles 1b 417 **Sperring Mary St Giles 1b 417** (my emphasis) I am too tired to try the possible permmutations, but it might be worth considering this.
