Suppose you could order that birth cert with the proviso of Father's name George?? To change your name you click on ''My Account Details'' over on the green left-hand column. Enter password and change your name! Merry

I went back to the 'female' you found for 1853 and used Family Relatives to see if I could get a better copy - copy quite clear: Cook Female Pewsey 5a 156 So that is still a possibility........ I have the BIVRI records so if I can do any look ups for you please let me know. Off topic - how do I change my name so I can use a nickname?

LOL! Please IGNORE the Laura Julia Cook(e) b abt 1850, the daughter of James (Ag Lab) and Hannah who I'm sure is NOT THE ONE!!! This Laura was born in somewhere called East Grimstead, Wilts (yes, Grim, not Grin, which is in Sussex!) which is in Alderbury Reg district. I followed her through the census records to see if her dad ever became a painter or produced another forename, like George!! he didn't.....and he was still alive in 1881!! Also the minor detail that Laura Julia married in 1874 and was living happily with her hubby, Edward Earney, in 1881, escaped me until now!! I keep wondering though........what if this Laura Julia was named after a Cook relative and your Laura was named after the same person, so they might be cousins or something??? WHY CAN'T SHE BE FOUND??????? GGRRRRRRRRRRRRR!! Merry

Thanks for that Merry. Tried searching for Launa / Lorna but again no joy. Maybe it's one of those that you have to leave for a few months and then come back to, leave for a few more months and come back to...... Or maybe, having just read the thread on 'Ancestry to introduce all BMD from 1837...' I just pend for a few days and hope her birth magically appears then!! :o)) Again biiiiiiiiig thanks for all your work on this Di

I'm struggling with the writing - would it be any help if I emailed you a copy of the cert?

Merry Report 15 Jan 2006 19:18

Things are getting desparate!! Thoughts....... Maybe she started off with a different name? Perhaps on the earlier censuses she was living with a step-father and used his name until she left home? Maybe she is a Cook on the earlier censuses, but is hiding behind a different first name? Maybe she just liked Laura? maybe she didn't come from Colling-whatever-it-was, but from a different Wilts village? I do feel she was from Wilts though........ In answer to your Q - reg office weddings were first set up in 1837. Useful for people who were of different religious denominations, but also cheaper for those who were not worried about the religious aspect of a wedding. In desparation.....who were the marriage witnesses?? Was there an address given for the bride and groom? Was there no occupation listed for George Cook, dec'd?? Merry

Merry I've done a check on all the children: Albert E - can't find anything yet Beatrice Laura - Mar 1875 Farnham 2a 79 Bertha Lilly - Jun 1876 Farnham 2a 85 (think this is also the Lilly on 2 of the census') Ada Jessie - My great Grand Mother :o) Harry A - can't find anything yet Oliver Christian - Jun 1883 Farnham 2a 105 Percy George Dec 1885 Lambeth 1d 531 Daisy Amelia - Dec 1889 Lambeth 1d 507 I have a typed copy of Ada Jesse's birth cert and mother's maiden name is Cook. Despite lots more searching I still come up blank on the Cook family - they must be a figment of my imagination LOL There must be a way to crack this Cook brick wall.........

Merry - what can I say! You're absolutely brilliant!! I must work on my search techniques LOL I've had another look at the marriage cert and I don't think I'm missing anything (both of them had a profession of Bakers). Hang on just had an idea - I wonder if it could be Coole - will check this out....... Nope can't find anything onthat or some variants and still sure it's Cook. The marriage took place in a registry office - wasn't that unusual way back then?

Looks like Albert H Vivash died before 1901, so no good looking for him on the census :o(( Name: Vivash, Albert Harry Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 46 Quarter: March Year: 1897 District: Reigate County: Surrey Volume: 2a Page: 114 Here's the remaining group with their mum in 1901: Ann Holmes abt 1827 Shoreham, Sussex, England Boarder Worthing Sussex Naome Holmes abt 1866 Shoreham, Sussex, England Boarder Worthing Sussex Annie Maple abt 1880 Shoreham, Sussex, England Visitor Worthing Sussex Daisy Vovash abt 1891 Buxton, London, England Daughter Worthing Sussex Gladys Vovash abt 1893 Buxton, London, England Daughter Worthing Sussex Harry Vovash abt 1889 Buxton, London, England Son Worthing Sussex Laura Vovash abt 1856 Kingstor, Collingbourne Head Worthing Sussex Lily Vovash abt 1878 Maltby, Hampshire, England Daughter Worthing Sussex The children born Buxton, should read Brixton. The dau Lily's entry is difficult to read. It does say Hampshire, but also, ''Lame, cripple from childhood'' in the disability column. This has overwritten where in Hampshire Lily was born :o(( Now the dreaded Laura! At last.......a result, I think!! The census actually reads: ''Kingston Collingbourne'' and the enumerator's checker has written ''Wilts'' by the side. So I think the first census we found - 1881 - that said Kingston Surrey was surely a mistake and she did come from this Wiltshire village?!?!? In fact, I think it's called Collingbourne Kingston! ........................and after all that, I still can't find her when young!! Are you sure she was called Cook?? LOL If she was born there it would be a Pewsey district birth cert (IF SHE WAS REGISTERED!! LOL) ....there's this one: Births Jun 1853 Cook Female Pewsey 5a 1__ which probably isn't her!! LOL The page number is illegible on the FreeBMD version. I would feel happier if she could be traced in 1861 or 1871. Shouldn't be here now!! Back much later! Merry

I don't put a surname in at all.......just switch about with some of the other forenames and places...... Need to find Laura in 1901 really, but too tired now!! Back tomorrow evening to see if anyone else has resolved this! (hope so!! LOL) I couldn't find any Cooks from the right place in Wiltshire in 1861/71 :O(( Merry

In 1881 Albert was a publican and on this one he was a bread baker. There is a Kingston Deverill (sp?) in Wiltshire. Maybe she came from there???????????????? NOT SURREY!! Looking again.............. Merry

Giz Report 14 Jan 2006 23:38

Doh why didn't I think to check the dates!! From the info in front of me it appears that Albert jnr, Beatrice and Lillly were illegitimate but Ava and Harry were legit. On their marriage cert it definitely states that Albert was a bachelor and Laura was a spinster. That's not to say they didn't lie....

Merry

Merry Report 14 Jan 2006 23:29

Well, Kingston (where she says she was born in 1881) has it's own reg district....so I wouldn't accept the Farnham one without something to suggest she was born there. The marriage cert would have her father's name and occ, which would help a lot. Oh, you mush have that to know their ages????? Update - Sorry....George......!! Was her hubby married previously?? Rather a lot of kids for a couple only married three or four years! Merry

Merry Not yet. For the first time I now know that Ada/Ava had siblings! With what you've just comeup with I've just found: Name: Cook, Sarah Louisa Record Type: Births Quarter: September Year: 1853 District: Farnham County: Hampshire Surrey Volume: 2a Page: 58 (click to see others on page) Do you think she could have taken her middle name? Again thanks for helping on this - you've given me that 'buzz' back where I had been sooooo stuck Di
