Mandy in Wiltshire

Mandy in Wiltshire Report 18 Jan 2006 22:56

Looked for my own birth (well didn't you all?!) and couldn't find me. Even though I was adopted, I have my original birth certificate so know I was definitely registered in first quarter. So did a search on just the surname for that quarter - nothing at all, nobody was born! But I am on 1837, so someone must have dropped that quarter while they were walking to the photocopier LOL! Mandy :)

Rachel Report 18 Jan 2006 23:22

I'm missing too. The page \I'm on is not there and I know 1837 has the page as does familyrelatives

BobClayton Report 18 Jan 2006 23:24

There are lots of errors with the first and last names which the search uses. I found first name Bopkins as the first name on a 'H' page (instead of Hopkins) Bob

Merry

Merry Report 18 Jan 2006 23:25

If it doesn't give you the page you want, you have to think laterally!! I was searching ten years looking for a marriage for Penney. Some Q's it was offering me 8 or nine pages with name ranges like Panner-Tapper which was really Tanner-Tapper....or Furnival-Penney, which was really Furnival-Fenney!! Then NO page with Penney on! I just tried a search for Per* or Pat* and if I could find the right age for that, I could jump forward or back three or four pages to get to the right one. You can browse the images from the start, but that always seems more longwinded..................... Then there was the time when they had missed filming a page, but luckly 1837online came to the rescue!! (good job I bought those units! LOL)......And I DID find the marriage, ten years earlier than expected and an extra 5 children no one knew about!! Merry

Ive just mailed them reporting wrong Initials on the pages I was looking up. I guess if everyone mails the errors they may pull their finger out and get it updated and oh please, name searchable!

Chris in Sussex

Chris in Sussex Report 19 Jan 2006 00:12

I am getting soooo..fed up with the initial search pages Searching for Killey 36 page results for a three year period..... Not very likely me thinks! Essex to Therington given as names on page are actually Essex to Etherington (ok the E was a little faded but even I could read it!) No wonder the name search has given so many results Will have to get my head around Merry's lateral thinking suggestion which will not be easy at this time of the morning :( Chris

Reading my previous posting I have had a thought..... At least it is nicer sitting at home with a hot cuppa (or something stronger) than sitting in the local FRC trawling through film after film.....Especially,as in my case, it may be a surname mistranscribed/misspelt on a census :( Chris<<<< Trying to stay positive :)

I am only entering a 1yr period at a time, then it doesn't look too overwhelming

I am fed up with looking for 'K' as surname and getting a page that starts with the christian names! Or is it me doing summut wrong?............yet again. DOH!

Georgia

Georgia Report 19 Jan 2006 04:39

I was looking up the death of my grandfather (not sure of exact year, but can place the decade) , and it gave births for 1983, not deaths. And I double checked just in case I had goofed but no, it was still bringing up births. I shall have to report that as I'm now pretty sure that's the year :-(

I am definitely positively absolutely on 1837 (1st quarter 1964) but that page definitely positively absolutely does not exist on Ancestry pmsl! When I typed in just the surname, no pages came up at all, so according to Ancestry there was nobody in the whole of the UK registered in 1st quarter 1964 with my surname (highly unlikely, it's not an unusual name!). Ah well, I suppose there are bound to be teething problems, and I've also encountered some of the oddities that you've mentioned here. At least I know I exist ... I think!! Mandy :)))
