Have you requested the birth certificate for your grandfather showing the mother's maiden name?

Not sure how I find anymore information re my G/grandfather and his wife. Details known: G/Grandfather - James Hampson born Manchester 1866 died 1944 and is on 1901 Census. G/Grandmother - Harriet Alice Hampson born 1864 died 23/09/1899 (giving birth to my grandfather George Hampson born 23/09/1899 died 1979) death registered at Prestwich. How can I find out Hariet Alice's maiden name, I can find no record of her in the 1891 Census because she could have lived anywhere and am struggling to find a record of their marriage although it could be anytime between c1882 and 1899 (assuming they were married, and if they were married it was in the Manchester area). Am I missing a trick here, or just being stupid? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Vanessa
