In the 1901 census I have this family living in Sunninghill Berkshire Frederick Dollery head Mary Ann Dollery wife and this is the puzzle William Dollery son age 14, now I do know Frederick and May Ann did not marry until 1892 so how can the 14 year old William be theirs I also can't find him in the 1891 census or his birth. Anyone any ideas Margaret

it may be possible that the parents were not married when he was born.

Have you got Mary Ann in the 1891 census? William may be her son and registeresd in her maiden name. Jacqui

I think Mary Ann is the dau of Charles and Ann Goodchild....though I had to go back to 1871 to find her at home! LOL In 1891 they have a ''son'' living with them called William Goodchild. He could be theirs as mum is only mid 40's, but just wondered if he is Mary Ann's? Then when she marries Frederick the child takes his name.......... NOPE - FORGET THAT IDEA.......William Goodchild is still with parents in 1901.........must have left a searchbox filled last time I checked for him......!! LOL Sorry! Merry

Yes, but the registration district is in London/Surrey!! A clue is that the volume ref begins with 1 (1d, isn't it?) - all the London one's are 1 These are the parishes it covers. Newington St. Mary (1870-1901), Southwark Christ Church, Southwark St. George (1870-1901), Southwark St. Saviour Merry

Thank you for all the replies Esta it looks as though you found him as Sollary in the 1891 census. Yes Mary Ann Dollery maiden name was Goodchild and William was her brother as you see by the 1891 and 1901 census. Still confused whom William Dollery was wonder if Frederick parents died and he was a brother. will keep looking thank you Margaret

Just a general point - any 'son' or 'daughter' on a census is only listed as the son or daughter of the head of household, so you cannot assume that the head's wife is the mother of the child. But also, you will often find a step-son or step-daughter listed as son or daughter. So this boy could be the son of either the head or his wife by a previous relationship. Kate.
