If you're saying you need the GRO ref to order online from GRO - yes - just as you'd need the local ref to order from a local RO online. If you haven't found it - have you looked only in the expected quarter? or have you looked a bit either side? People lied about their ages for all sorts of reasons (my g-g-mother wanted to be not quite so much older than her 20-yr-old husband when they married, and seems to have maintained the fiction of being about 6 years younger than actual thereafter; others wanted to be old enough to marry without parental consent). Can someone please help and save me spending more unnecessary money. I want to order a birth certificate online from 1896, so have tried on the family history site but need a gro number? To try and get this I have bought units on 1837 online as recommended in my WDYTYA book, but no success. Can anyone point me in the right direction, because I seem to be chasing my tail but never catching it! ;0)) Julie
