Hello All Does anyone know if Queenie is a nickname for a full name? We have a photo with of my Great Great Grandparents, which looks like a family potrait and on the back the child is called Queenie, but we cannot find a birth for her at all Any ideas much appreciated Kind regards Sue

It can be a name in its own right. I don't know that it's short for anything, but it might have been used as a nickname, like calling a little girl 'Princess'. Any dates - can you find a likely candidate with family on the census? nell

It is a name in its own right. Sometimes it was used as a nickname if the girl had the same name as the reigning Queen.

Hello Nell Thanks for the reply. The photo we believe was taken circa 1920, and the child is about 8-10 years old so no help there. Have searched the BMD from 1905 (year after last child born) to 1915 and no Queenie Cooper's being born in the county. Even more frustrating is that we have her wedding photo to and the only name on the back is Queenie's wedding - but my Grandmother and her sister are bridesmaids - so frustrating. I am now beginning to wonder if in fact she is a Cooper at all - and could possibly a grandchild! Regards Sue

Hello Twinkle Thanks for the information about nickname if named after the Queen at the time - that would have been Mary - which is also my Great Great Grandmother's name and none of the children have been named after her, which is a little odd as everyone else has been named after one of the family members. Which county were you searching the BMDs for Queenie? Leah

Hello Leah I am searching West Yorkshire, specificaly Bradford as this is where everyone else was born, and well they didnt move and her wedding photo has the name of the photographs on the back, which is also Bradford. Kind regards Sue

Queenie is a name in its own right - perhaps it was her middle name and she is registered under her first name, but was always called by her middle name, Queenie. Jay

Thanks everyone for your help I think I am going to have to look through the register for her as a possible cousin, good thing about that is that I can already rule out 3 of the 5 children as 2 are boys and the other one never had any children and moved to Oz. Hi My mother was always referred to as Queenie by her close relatives, think her father nicknamed her as a term of enderament. However, this has been raised on another thread, and several people like above, also mentioned it had to do with the childs original first name being related to a previous Queen eg , Ellizabeth, Mary etc Sheila p,s my mothers first name was Julia.

I had a great Auntie Queenie. Her name was totally unrelated as it was a nickname which a neighbour gave her when she ill. It came from something 'like poor Quen how is she today'. Somehow as a result of this she was known as Queenie for the rest of her life. Her actual name was Helena!

My friend is called Queenie, but her real name is Magdelane......

Thanks to all for the advice and help this afternoon regarding my missing Queenie. I have now found her, she was indeed a cousin to my Grandmother and therefore in the photo she is actually with her Grandparents. Thank you again Kind regards Sue
