Whats up Heather?

Mary Ann Groves born 1841/42 In 1851 appears on census - living with rest of family/siblings in Shoreditch with her place of birth, St George in the East, SURREY For every following census til her death pob shown as either Southwark or Rotherhithe (she is living Rotherhithe all that time). Now I sent off for a birth cert for Mary Ann Groves 1842 Lambeth as I thought that was the only one which would be near enough to Rotherhithe BUT it is the wrong girl, specified dads name. SO there are three other possibles for the 1841/43 period - Whitechapel, Shoreditch or St Luke. My question is: If she were born in Rotherhithe - say mum was staying with gran or whatever, if mum registered her in Shoreditch when she got home again, would that still show as Shoreditch - even with an addy for south of the river?? Im thick, but would you have to go back to the office where the kiddie was born?

Sorry, Jane, dropped me beans on toast on the floor as I was typing and had to fight Ralph for it.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh - never even contemplated that one Merry. Oh, Ralph got the soggy bit of toast from the middle of the bread, I nicked the rest. BUT IN THEORY, Merry?

Hi Heather This is a bit like the prison thread. You are registered where you are born (or die). Either Mary Ann doesn't know where she was born or possibly the birth wasn't registered. A friend of mine had her birth registered where her father worked, rather than in the district she was born in, and the certificate is splattered with the reason this happened.

Heather Report 23 Feb 2006 18:16

Blow it. I thought well perhaps you could register anywhere as long as you had right place on the certificate - shows you what a dope I am. Well, saved me wasting money on one of the others anyway. Ill check out the siblings, but Id rather buy certs with my direct ancestors names on. Thanks guys. Time to cheer myself up with double choc icecream (Old man is in London today doing art galleries, so I can do whatever I want)

Thinking of Ralphie....what a dogs breakfast that 1851 census sheet is........looks like the beans on toast went the wrong way there too.......Just looking at it harder..... Merry

The other thought is, if her parents say St George in the East, might she actually have been born north of the river, and SURREY is just an unfortunate mistake?

hallo My dad went to the nearest register office to register my birth BUT it wasn't in the reg district where I was born, so the birth cert was issued by the reg district where I was born and it says 'by declaration' in the informant's details. nell

I don't think it does say St George in the East...... Doesn't it say: Surrey, St George (and on the next line) Southwark ?????????????????????????????????????????? Merry

Heather Report 23 Feb 2006 18:35

You know, that right, its hard to read but it is Surrey St George Southwark. Still, doesnt help does it!!! Actually that does teach me or remind me not to take ancestrys transcriptions as gospel.

Merry
