How about a marriage for the children and get a birth year from the marriage cert? Or death of Gladys - might give some clues.....

have found some births but so far not found 3 with the same mothers maiden name.....am still looking though so dont give up yet name Quater Year Place Volume Page mothers name Jean March 1935 Stoke T 6b 192 Rowley Jean Dec 1936 Stoke T 6b 251 Jones Jean March 1937 Stoke T ? ? Hulstone Jean March 1939 Colchester 4a 1380 Scott Jean March 1942 Stoke T 6b 185 Johnson Jean V March 1941 Colchester 4a 1365 Jay Sydney R Sept 1943 Stoke T 6b 385 Kardley Sandra E Dec 1948 Colchester 4a 738 Carter I did think that at a push Rowley and Kardley could be the same but bad spelling or hard to read handwriting meant they are listed differently howerver as yet i cant find a birth for sandra that would back up this theory

my dad was still in the army he met my mum there she was in the ATS he was based in GREAT dunmow essex i have a picture of the three children jean sydney and sandra( on the back it says jean micheal and sandra 23/9/1951) i dont no whether micheal has sydny as a name as well because my dad had a brother called sydney. Jean is the eldest in the pic about 10 or 11 micheal is about 6 or 7 and sandra looks about 2 or 3 in one of the letters my dad did mention the daughter being put in a home i seem to think it is jean because there is some mention of an illness!!!

carole dont lose heart it is not a hopless case at all, the information is out there its just a matter of narrowing down the search...sorry for asking so many questions but sometimes the smallest thing helps....another question, did you get the impression that Jean and Sydney were quite a bit older than sandra? i am wondering if they bere born before the war and sandra after? that could be why the 2 eldest are in the book and sandra isnt. what do you think? also does your father talk about any of the children in the letters to your mum? isf he does does anything he says give a clue to how old they are? was your father still in the army when he wrote the letters?

Carole

Carole Report 26 Feb 2006 15:57

thr letters are dated 1948 and 1949 its begining to look like a helpless case!!!

ok let me see if i can find any of their births, and fingers crossed their mother had an unusual maiden name

Janet

Janet Report 26 Feb 2006 15:14

The age of enlistment was 18, not 21 and yes they could fight for their country at 18 but could not vote or get married without parental consent until age 21. Funny old world!! If child born about 1947 try looking for a marriage about 1945/1947ish and the best way is to trawl about 10 years through each quarter, easier to do on 1837 online than the books or fiche. Janet

Carole Report 26 Feb 2006 15:14

the children where JEAN and SYDNEY these are on his service book his youngest daughter was SANDRA i met her at my dads funeral she was about late 20's early 30's then so i was born in 1959 so i guess she was born any time between 1947 onwards

Websterbfc

Websterbfc Report 26 Feb 2006 15:08

dont suppose you have any idea of their childrens names and ages when the letters were written as that may be another way of tracking her down?

Carole

Carole Report 26 Feb 2006 15:06

i did know that my dad was married before because i was told at some point that i have two sisters and a brother but until i read the letters i did not know that he was seeing my mum at the time he was married!! i have checked quarter by quarter from 1930 to 1935 but i was hoping if he enlisted in 1935 he would have been married before if his wife is on the book he would have to have been 18 when he got married unless i will have to go forward a bit more and he was married later and his wife was added later as next of kin

Websterbfc

Websterbfc Report 26 Feb 2006 14:59

omg carole did you just find out about the other wife?? so you have checked quater by quater form 1930 - 1935? how many edward henry scotts have you found? dont think it is a long shot think t is a very sensible way of finding the marriage..do you know if she died, or they divorced?
