One of my grandmothers siblings born roughly 1904-1910 was known as QUEENIE..... Now having searched all records painstakingly, the only one that makes any sense would be MARY CECILIA HEDGE - is this likely or am I just trying to piece it together and adding 2+2 and getting 73? |

Queenie is a name in its own right. However, it was also sometimes used as a nickname for a girl who had the same name as the monarch. If she was born 1904-1910, that was some 200 years after the last Queen Mary, however! The monarch at the time was Edward VII, but his wife was Alexandra, not Mary. Still possible that your Queenie was a nickname though but I think that you'd need more supporting evidence to be sure. |

Hi Pink, Just did a quick search for the name Queenie and it appears to be a name in its own right... Though sure a few people might have used it as a nick name of sorts.. Debs x |

Oooh just realised why I couldn't find her...... she was born before her parents married!! :O) Grandma would be appalled if it is her especially as her mother was such a task master on marrying the right kind!! Too the degree that she wouldn't go to Grandma's wedding as she thought she was marrying beneath herself as Grandad was a Painter and Decorator!! :O) |

Diana - if she was born before her parents married, then most likely she would have been registered with her mother's maiden name. Have you checked that out? Richard |

Absolutely nothing for Queenie Gentry in 10 years before the wedding and 10 years after. Is it possible fr her to have the fathers name even if not married..... they would have married 3 months after her birth!! xx |

The actual register entry only records the first names of a child. For the purposes of indexing, the surname was taken from the mother's surname. Therefore, if the mother was not married, and had told the truth at the time, Queenie would have been listed under her mother's surname in the index. However, if the parents had told porkies regarding their marital status, she could well have been listed under her father's surname (i.e. if the mother had given her name as ''Hedge formerly Gentry''). This would have been easier to do in a big city, less chance that the registrar would have known the truth! |
