According to the 1881 census an ancestor of mine - Elizabeth Isly Robinson (nee Kelly) - was born in 1812 in 'Isley Blou (or Dlou) Spain, British parents'. Her father had served in '1st Regiment of Foot', when I don't know. I am assuming Elizabeth was born while her father was serving in Spain, but where might 'Isley Blou/Dlou' be? I suspect it might relate to Gibraltar. Any ideas anyone?

Hi Elaine, I wanted to check the image myself before I posted the message but all I got was an 'Error' message on Ancestry. Her husband was Robert Robinson born 1807, Crathorn, Yorkshire.

Have you got access to Ancestry One World Tree - there is someone there researching this name

Not sure about that Elaine! I subscribed to Worldwide Ancestry just before Christmas . . . . expensive but I have used it a lot. How do I see 'Ancestry One World Tree'?

Found it!! Interesting, I'll check it out.

I got the error message as well but I traced her back to 1851 where it said the same thing. I think I can guarantee that there is no such place in Spain and I have checked my AA Spain book for anything which could be compared phonetically - Nothing. I can't help with Gibraltar. Dea x

I checked out the 'Ancestry Tree' and discovered I had already contacted them via a different surname (Groskop) from the tree and via a different source than Ancestry. If all that makes sense!! Obviousley I didn't ask about the Spain link. Oh, this family history can be complicated!

1851 Eliza I Robinson abt 1812 Isley Blow British Parents, Spain Wife Stockton on Tees Durham I wouls guess that isley is meant to be Isle of, but blow seemes to be out of place.

Hi Lunar.............when were you made a lady then! lol I agree with the Isley being Isle of, but the Blow is just the Ancestry transcribers idea of what they think it says! Personally I would say that the last letter is either an N or a U. The penultimate letter looks like an O but I have seen A's writtten like that. The second letter does look like an L but sometime the enumerators don't cross their T's causing them to look like an L. And as for the first letter..........well it could be just about anything! LOL

Stu, Sure you've come to the same conclusion, but I think your man might have been involved in the Peninsular War. Maybe if you research places in the kind of 1812-14 timeframe, you might relate to one of them .... I'm thinking of Albuera in particular, but I haven't studied it in detail. Good luck! Regs Jane

Thanks everyone! It might help if I could discover where the '1st Regiment of Foot' were serving in 1812. That might be easier said than done!

Stu, Have you been to regiments*org? Jane

Jane Report 4 Mar 2006 16:27

Stu, Have you tried looking for her father's military records on the national archives website? There's a chance the documents survived - especially if he lived to collect his pension! If you're lucky, you get a full list of the places your man served. Why do you suspect Gibraltar? Is that where civilians/family members were housed during the War? What about trying to get a birth cert for the lady in question? The Registrar might have been able to spell!! Regs Jane

I'll certainly check out the two web-sites suggested. Jane Sandy - I suspected Gibraltar simply because that is where British troops have been stationed for many years, no other reason just a hunch! Where else in Spain would British troops be stationed, with the family, for a child to be born as opposed to a regiment fighting in a war - without family members with them? Elizabeth was born in 1812, 25 years before civil registration started. I have another ancestor who was born in Gibraltar 1822 (no family connection though).

Are the overseas births for people in the Army available for searching on 1837 ?? I know there is an overseas section but not sure what it is - someone will no doubt put me straight if I am wrong !!

Rachel

Rachel Report 4 Mar 2006 16:49

Yes Elaine, army births over seas are on 1837, they start in 17something or other. I checked and the only one I could see that would fit the age for Eliza* Kelly was the one I've given above.
