I am trying to find a marriage for James Mor(e)ton in London ! HE was born in Shoreditch ...Children Born in Shreditch.... Family from Shoreditch....I can't see any marriages in Shoreditch but have found 2 .......1 in St Saviours and ! in St Lukes . My London Geography is rubbish so does anyone know if either of these places are close enough to be possibles ! Esta x

The only St Lukes Parish I know is now the area called Old Street, which is just down the road from Shoreditch about 5 mins away. St Lukes church is still standing - although it was a ruin until a couple of years ago when they renovated it and turned it into a music hall for the local children. Looking at an old map of the area that I have, everything was St Lukes something, from the hospital to the burial grounds Hope this helps Kind regards Sue

Hi Esda, I think the St Lukes you are referring to is St Lukes Old street in Finsbury, which is the next district to Shoreditch, and very likey the other church will be close by. My gg grandfather was born in Shoreditch but Christened at St Lukes Old st Finsbury along with other siblings. Lin

Esda, It's interesting to note you are from Bristol, as that is where my gg grandfather and his family ended up, although born in Shoreditch. I think families for the most part, were on the move then, some stayed settled in London, but a lot went on and were just passing through London at that time, settling in places like Bristol, as my family did. Esta! - Do you know where any of the Shoreditch family were buried? I have Shoreditch rellies from 1860 onwards but don't have a clue where they may have been put to rest, one day soon I shall want to start looking for them, so any suggestions gratefully received! Thanks

Hello Lyndsey I have been looking at some old maps of the area, as I now live in Old Street and unfortunately it looks like most of the cemetry sites were quite small and are now a days small parks. Very few cemetries in the centre of London actually survive. Kind regards Sue

Lin / Sue Thank- you very much ..........If I can't find anything better I might have to take a chance on the St Lukes marriage !! Lin, I can't seem to get any of my rellies out of London. My mum was born and brought up in London and it's this side of the tree I am doing. Everyone before my Mum is from London.....My knowledge of Shoreditch / Bethnal Green is getting better.But ...It would make research alot easier if someone was still in London but now they're everywhere but London !! If you want to see an old map of the area go this website - the link takes you dircectly to the section of the map that contains St Lukes Church at Old Street and the area in 1862 - if you use the directions and click east you will end up in Shoreditch area. If you look at the list of Registration Districts you should find that St Luke is probably the better bet for your search; St Savours is some distance away and covers the Southwark district.

Esta - don't forget that the marriage would take place in the bride's parish, so what is her birthplace on the censuses? Kate.

Lyndsey - Do a Google search on City of London Cemetery - it should bring up some useful sites that give information about this cemetery and where to find records of those buried etc.

Thank you all for. your help KATE.... I wish I knew who the bride was !!......and now I have to dis-count the marriage in St Lukes as it was 1849 ( Forgot JAmes was at home in 1851...).....BUM ! James Moreton is at home with his parents in 1851. By 1871 he is a widow with 2 children. I can't find any trace of him ( wife and Daughter ) in 1861 ...or the rest of the family from 1851 !! As his daughter was born 1852 and his son born 1862 then he should be on 1861 but i can't see him.... Hence I was trying to find a possible marriage to find wifes name............ Esta.

Esta, Shoreditch is quite closely packed together and you may find that them moving one street along would land them in a totally different parish altogether - so don't be surprised by them not being where you think. Other Shoreditch churches include St John the baptist and St Leonards. Also look out for Christ Church Hoxton, St Barnabus Islington and St Luke Old Street - mine have jumped back and forth between these despite not really moving very far at all - especially for marriages when the spouse coud be someone from up the road!! Yes, St John the Baptist Church in Hoxton is a definate possibility. I had a Gt Gt Aunt Emma, who lived in Little Norfolk Place , Shoreditch(address no longer exists I'm told) who got married there in 1871

I've been looking for too long now and am just going around in circles so am off for a coffee. A Lot of my rellies were born in Shoreditch and Bethnal Green and I have found most christenings and marriages St Leonards.

Esta Re 1861 census . I have two families missing form the 1861, and they were from around Shoreditch as well. Methinks there are pages missing they are not telling us about Fred
