Hi Merry, I've got Lily Maria's birth certificate. It states mothers name as ' Marion Stokes formerly Godfrey' and she's signed it Marion Stokes. Lou

So you need to find out what happened to Eliza.........if she didn't die, then that might be why you can't find a marriage for Marian! Do you have Lily's birth cert? Merry

Hi everybody, Only just got back, sorry. Don't think she would have been married previously as she was only about 18 when she 'married' Edward, so that's unlikely. Merry's found my family of Stokes, I can't find them after 1881. I have searched for Edward at an early date, and think I may have found him. His occupation at that time was Brass Caster and his wife was Eliza b 1846 Birmingham and daughter Sarah Ann / Amy b 1870 Birmingham. It never occured to me that they would marry at a later date. Is this them in 1881? Edward STOKES Head M Male 38 Birmingham, Warwick, England Brass Dresser Marian STOKES Wife M Female 29 London, Middlesex, England Lily M. RIVETTE Lodger U Male 45 G Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Coach Trimmer (RCM) I always wonder when there is an age gap, that perhaps the older party has already been married.......then they can't marry the new partner if the first wife (in this case) is still alive........ I can't pinpoint them on the 1881 census either. Which census did you find them on, Looby?

PinkDiana

PinkDiana Report 6 Apr 2006 15:30

Have you checked ANY of the census records cos i can't even find an Edwards Stokes in Birmingham on 1871 who would have been old enough!!

Heather

Heather Report 6 Apr 2006 15:18

Have you looked for them on the 1861 census as unmarried people? Would seem more likely - though not absolute, that a girl that young would still be in her local neighbourhood when she married?

You can search on ancestry free the beta bmd index to find them if you are certain they actually married. But it isnt unusual for women to say they are married at the registration of a birth - telling porkies. Did they go on to have other children? You may have to look years passed this birth to see if they married later on. Ive got one couple who married 17 years after first kiddie was born.

Is there any chance that SHE had been married before this marriage? Because it would be registered under her say WIDOW name?

~Looby Loo~ Report 6 Apr 2006 14:44

Hi, I am looking for a marriage of Edward Stokes to Marion Godfrey around 1868 - 1870. Marion was born in London 1852c, whilst Edward was born in Birmingham Marion could be spelt Marrianne, Mariann, Maryann. She's Marion on birth cert, and Mary Ann on a census. Daughter's birth certificate dated 1870, Birmingham which states 'mother's maiden name Godfrey'. They had another son named William around 1876 also born Birmingham.1843. Occupation Brass Dresser on daughter's birth cert, but on daughters marriage he's a Chandelier Maker. As Marion was born in 1852 and daughter was born 1870, I can't believe she would have married before 1868. I have asked several members who offer BMD searches and so far no luck. I'm desperate, if they got married, which the birth certificate indicates then why can't I find them? Any help or advice will be extremely appreciated, and thanks for looking, Regards Lou
