Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 12 Apr 2006 09:06

Not all of Surrey has moved, but if you need anyone from Woking, you may find like I just have, that it's moved to the Syrian Arab Republic. I don't understand why Harriet Newman is from there in 1861, whereas other Harriets from the same area were born in Surrey. ( Trawling for a Harriet, but still haven't found the one I need)

Hi Does this mean that the reason I can't find my rellies due to them all be mistranscribed. Oh blow this means I will have to look even harder. (lol) Half Pint

I lost ZEBULON for 20 years, couldnt find a trace! He eventually appeared again, with the lovely name of LEBUTON!

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 11 Apr 2006 19:48

I reckon I am quite experienced at looking through PRs and finding a name I am looking for without much trouble. But I was mystified as to why I couldnt find my Daniel Green (who had a definite birthdate on the IGI). Looking at the page for the umpteenth time, I finally found him - he looked, (to me anyway) like Daniel GUBBIN! Olde Crone

Yes, I always correct the names if poss. shame you can't do this with place names, occupations and all the other things!

On Ancestry, have found many many mis-spellings. Most of them mis-interpretations of the original document. One general rule I follow is to put in a name correction every time (as long as I am sure!)

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 11 Apr 2006 19:05

I have to thank Merry for finding my Chambers family for me,mistranscribed as Gresham!!!Not even close at all really, but there you go. Now if i can find my elusive Thorbon Elmer and work out why 1 of his sisters married a man in 1880 and down as wife of this man in the 1881 i might be somewhere near toppling my brick wall. Glen

I was looking for Peterson and somebody found the family under the name Mitchsson. They were the family above them on the page. Original census sheet was correct - looks like the transcriber just got carried away lol!!

Heather Report 11 Apr 2006 14:27

Its just hard work Victoria. Sometimes you just enter a first name and all the other info and then have to trawl through hundreds of James born 1835 in Lancashire until you find a likely lad and look at the image to see if it is actually the one you want. Other times you can find the relatives and then mooch about in the same area looking for likely candidates. Or you choose one of the family with an unusual first name - then you cut down the options. Its a real kick when you do find them though! My best ones were Emily Horstus (instead of Horstead) and Charlotte Meins (instead of Steers).

Eunice - your Elijah and Arthur needed a brother called Paul - then he could have been mistranscribed as Pulla? Christine

Merry

Merry Report 11 Apr 2006 13:36

Victoria.....usually if you can find the people on one census it gets a bit easier.....usually they are found by trying different bits of the known information and leaving other bits blank..........then looking through the lists of names brought up for likely mistranscriptions. Less is often more! Also looking for a different family member who might be with your rellie.... Really it's just practice in the end! Merry

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new to this family history lark and just wondered, when things are badly mis-transcribed, how do you find them? Is it just lucky guesswork? Victoria.
