I've got a Jones in my tree, I've spelt it Jonesx to stop the thousands of hot matches coming through. When I started I had a couple of really good hot matches from people who were generous enough to share their information with me. It really helped me get started. So now I always go through them and follow up potential matches. However, what I don't understand is that no-one has ever sent me a query about a potential hot match. Why not? Sorry did not read reply til this morning and realised genes had not copied all the web page into my message. I will type it instead of coppying !!!! Hold on when I put in the web page it looks right bu when I go and look at the message its not there so I will put it on different lines but it is all one web site. Sorry no matter how I do it it won't show all the web page don't know why !!!!!! (In address bar write) www.genesreunited.co.uk (Then (write) /genesrunited.asp (Then write) ?WCI=YourNames That took some doing Ignore the words in brackets an write the rest into the address bar. This was the only way I could get it to show the website. Thats the web page and you should get a list of all the names in your tree and how many of the same name on the site. Against each name you get the option of viewing your names or viewing entire site. I have been viewing entire site and have sent messages to anyone who has a matching name in the same area. I always put at the end of my email to people 'I would appreciate a reply if this corresponds with your information or not' I do this on hot matches as well and find I get a lot more replies. Through doing this I have found a cousin of my Husband and a very possible match on my family that will give me over 100 relatives of one Surname. Plus a lot more very possible matches. Hope this helps Christine

On a positive note I have found 3 genuine 'matches' and I was quite happy to look through them until... I acquired a John JONES in my tree about 3 months ago! Now about 3/4 of my hot matches are Jones's. I've re-typed in the name now in my tree as J*O*H*N Jones hoping that I'll confuse the system and not get as many ... I'll report back if this works. Christine Do you mean SEARCH FAMILY TREES? This is what I usually use - its on the green panel to the left of this, under the quivering cherries! Olde Crone

I don't know if you know but there is another part of Genes where you can get all your matches and contact people. I don't know how I dropped on it but I can't find a way of doing it from Genes pages. it is http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/genesreunited.asp?WCI=YourNames I have done better off this than I have with Hot Matches though I have had good contacts from that to.

It sepends on when you subscribed. I think that you get them every two weeks - so if you subscribed on a Sunday you get them on a Sunday, Monday monday, etc.

I got mine on Sunday!!! I have every Wood in the world, this time. As 'my' Wood is a married-in, on a remote branch, I may very well delete HIM, instead of deleting 20 pages of Not Matches. Olde Crone

Doreen the hot matches stay around. You just click view ignored matches. I find if I keep the ones that are in my tree the new ones just add to that person. No new matches today. I am still on A-H. The trouble is I find a match with one of my Blacker's or Cavell's add the exra names and then next time they come back as hot matches. I have had a few good matches but several cranks as I genuinely have a George Bush and several Churchill's in my tree as far as I know no relation to the politicians.

Heather Report 12 Apr 2006 12:21

Doreen, dont think you can retrieve, but all you have to do is enter the name in the tree search facility and you will find it again anyway.

hiya, it would be nice if Genes could refine the hot match service, I have had some 'hits' from it, which I have found most helpful. However, when you get 8 or 10 pages of stuff you dont need, and there is no way of deleting the hot matches you dont want, it becomes mundane trawling thro' the pages, come on genes sort it out!!! sorry folks, Moan over regards Julie

I managed to find a load of my Brown relatives on the censuses the other week and so finally had enough info on them to make it worth adding them to my tree. But of course that means that I am back to getting pages full of unconnected Browns on every Hot Matches run! Kate.
