Mmmm. Not entirely convinced by this new Tree Viewer. It is however still being tested and there's still problems to resolve. I think the problem lies in the fact that I use the new version of Family Historian where I can do lots of wacky and weird things with my tree at incredible speed, so that using this tree viewer is a bit of come down. It is very slow to navigate around the tree. The large tree that another member has recently given me access to won't display. As mentioned on a previous message on this thread, years of death are not shown as they were on the old tree programme. My first attempt at printing the tree failed. A message came up saying something like 'the script of this movie is making flash player run slowly, you may have to abort'. I did a print preview as a precaution and all I got was a lot of blank pages with the page numbers on them. This message confirmed that you do need Flash player to use this, however I can't see that theres anywhere to download it on this site, if you haven't already got this on your computer. I had better luck on the second attempt. However much you zoom in on the screen, the print still prints the boxes the same minuscule size - so make sure you wear your glasses or have a magnifying glass to hand! I think that we're going to have to bear with this one!

Rachel, Make sure that you load your printer !!! I have tried and can only print out all of the tree. Which is a bit of a pain when you only need a small section to scribble on. I cant seem to get the section I need from other trees either. I know people are good enough to let us see their trees, but surely I am not the only one who is not interested in all of othe peoples trees, only the bit that links us. Also on the old tree programme it gives dates of death as well, useful when you are adding to your tree. Regards Julie

Had a thought - I have AOL blocking animated media on GR as I don't want to see those horrible adverts. I've just removed it and I can view the tree! Viewing the tree this way is new and is currently on test, so I guess that it's going to be replacing the old tree progamme eventually. I haven't tried to print yet though - I will let you know how I get on.

I've just looked at Help/FAQS and it doen't mention that Flash is required to view the tree. Usually when it's required on a site they give you the option to download it, which they haven't here. I think that we have this on our computer - my 4 year old son loves the Nick Jnr website and I'm sure that we've downloaded Macramedia Flash Player from there when prompted - is this the program you're talking about? I replied to GR's email, so hopefully I'll have an answer soon!

I think you have to have Flash enabled to see the Tree Viewer.

I've had a reply from GR this morning. They suggest that if I want to print my trees I should to family tree at the top of the GR screen next to home, then click on tree viewer. I have tried this however I get a blank screen where the tree should appear. I also get the same when I click on Take Tour. Does this happen to anyone else?

Once I get a response from GR I'll let you know. Rachel

The Old Tree program is excellent for getting an overview of where everyone fits in as it shows all generations together. It is also the only way of printing off a tree (which is what I like to do when I am revising a section and need a hard copy to scribble on). Just recently I've noticed that a lot of the shared trees which used to be viewable on the old program, now no longer work. I couldn't get at any of them last weekend. Does this mean that GR have started to delete them?

I prefer using the old program too. I am also having a problem viewing other trees that I have access to. I hope that GR will continue to maintain the old program. Can anyone who gets a reply from GR post it on this thread and let us know. Thanks Julie

Hi Deanna Sorry to take a while to get back to you. I've got about 20 trees that I have access to on this site, which I can view OK on the new format. However, when I click on old tree programme on the left hand column, and all of those trees come up, I can only get access to some. The rest I get this error message. I've emailed GR today, I expect support isn't in on Bank Holiday Monday, hopefully I'll get a response sometime this week!

I've had a terrible time finding this thread again... but then if I had been looking in Tips instead orGeneral, I would have found it! Right Rachael, I've had a look at mine which i use all the time and it SEEMS fine. What were you trying to do which would not work? And I'll try that. Deanna X

Peeved to say the least, since adding lots of names to my tree I can no longer use the old tree one at all. So I am unable to print off anything. Glad I had FTM as a present last year,( which apparently is now my only option ). The system cannot cope, even with just finding me !!! as you all say- error with drawing your tree normally appears.(so If you have more that a couple of hundred, forget using it for now!) no names come up on mine at all when I have tried to use it . emaillled GR after it was changed to the new tree, said they will look into it, STILL NO JOY! karen

You're right Brian it is. It will be a real shame if GR removes this facility. I'll contact them today to see what they say. Rachel

The old tree programme is much easier to read, the new one is like looking through a keyhole.

I use the old tree programme to print off trees, which you cannot do with the new version. Once it is all printed and stuck together it makes more sense then viewing lots of segments.

I just tried the old tree program, but got the same message as you. Forgive my ignorance, but I have never used the old tree......what is the advantage of using it? Merry

Rachel

Rachel Report 30 Apr 2006 17:22

I have wondered that too. When someone allows me access to their tree, I like to print it out so that I have a record just in case they remove my access (which has happened). The only place to do this is the old tree programme. I find the tree easier to read once it's all printed and stuck together. I don't like the way the trees are now displayed on here, a segment at a time. It's so difficult to see the whole picture, as I do with my computer software. Rachel

I have not had this problem, but it is usually painfully slow on this program, I wonder if GR are not really doing anything to maintain it anymore.

Rachel

Rachel Report 30 Apr 2006 17:09

I can't believe that I'm the only person with this problem! Oh well, looks like I have to contact GR - hopefully their response will be more constructive this time. Rachel
