BUT I am unable to find her on any census before her marriage. I have found a birth ref Mary Tranter Jan q 1868 6a 13 even if I send for birth cert I have no way of knowing if it the right one or not,What else can I do? thanks Linda x

Are there any TRANTER witnesses at her marriage? Maybe the combination of 1st names will help to identify the correct family in census.

Hi Linda I thought that a line drawn through where the father's name should have been usually meant that the person was illegitimate but the only Mary Tranters born in Shropshire around that time, from the census records, appear to have fathers. Unless....she was born before mum married and she took stepfather's name... Heather

hi all and thanks Gwyneth unfortunately the 2 witnesses were Smiths! so no relation. Heather thats the problem I am having I am assuming she was illegitamate or maybe as she was 20 when she got married had no consent so said she had no father? Georgina I have checked the 71 the Mary Ann 1868 is actually Margaret ann on the actual image :( Kath thanks for that, I have no idea how close the places are. they all seem to be Mary A where as birth ref and marriage cert both just say Mary am I being to picky? the 81 is the only one I think could be her, but still no parents to check oooooh I hate my rellies sometimes :)

Maybe Mary was baptised in the same church as the rest of the family? Perhaps you could find her parent(s) that way.
