Ive just looked for Georges death on a pay to view site - familyrelatives.org which is really useful usually for the period 1866-1920 as you can bring up all events for any name in one shot. Have to say, no George Rathmell died according to them from 1901-1911??? (Except a 2 year old in 1906) Im wondering if he were still alive when Maria left him and thats why she didnt marry until 1933?

Oh Gawd, Mary, of course your right. Ill have a quick look for it on the ancestry bmd index - at least you have cut down the trawling!! HELEN: If you want to use the GRO online facility use this reference: Name: Samuel Keeling Year of Registration: 1848 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Cheadle County: Staffordshire Volume: 17 Page: 55 http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp You complete the form - just follow it through using the info you have above, remember to tick the box which asks if you have a reference. You complete the registration with your details, use a card to pay £7 and then wait for them to send the certificate. It will give you both fathers names.

Hunslet's somewhere inYorkshire, I think. Just realised George was still alive in 1901, so I needn't have copied all that stuff. Would the marriage reference from StaffsBMD be OK for obtaining certificates from GRO? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the local offices use different reference numbers.

Heather Report 5 May 2006 23:29

Wheres Hunslet? Perhaps Helen knows. Well, looks like a trawl then. Thanks for your collaboration Mary! I wish I was starting all over again - you get info coming in from all directions dont you. Now I sit and think, who shall I try again to find.

No George Rathmell death in Staffs BMD, but FreeBMD is working for me. These are the only ones I found, but none of them looks very promising. Helen, you have a lot to take in here. So print it all off. Treble check that it makes sense (Im half way through a bottle of sauvignon so dont want to have made mistakes!). Then decide what more info you need. Do you need to get Rebecca Wheelers marriage cert aswell to trace the Wheeler line? Check in again tomorrow when you have sorted all this lot first! Personally, although he isnt your ancestor, Id want to find out about George Rathmells death - you could always send for his death certificate? (Mary, are you still lurking - freebmd is down - dont have a handy George Rathmell death do you??? 1901-1909?)

Heather

Heather Report 5 May 2006 23:06

Well, dear old Mary in Italy has been lurking (and I thought I was all alone on here tonight) and has very kindly found you the reference you need for the certificate. If you buy it from the records office where the event was first registered. Ive updated further down with the address you need if you buy from the GRO online site. See below

Here you go: Staffordshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1848 KEELING Samuel / BURTON Sarah / Alton, St Peter Staffordshire Moorlands / 1C/1/129 From http://www.bmsgh.org/staffsbmd

Heather

Heather Report 5 May 2006 22:51

Unfortunately freebmd does not have the marriage of Samuel Keeling and Sarah Burton (that was the mother in laws surname,so should be thewifes maiden name). To find the marriage reference, you should go to ancestry and check the free bmd index - not the name search freebmd as that is what Ive already checked. Say look for the most unusual name - Samuel Keeling about a year or two both sides of Georges birth. You can then use the reference to buy the certificate at GRO online for £7 and see Sarah and Samuels fathers names. Do you know how to buy a certificate?

1861 - Now this is lucky, he is a 9 year old boy living with dad who is a nailer and mum AND you have got mother in law thrown in which gives you his mothers maiden name: Lucy Burton abt 1837 Alton, Staffordshire, England Sister-in-law Alton Staffordshire Maria Burton abt 1801 Bradley, Staffordshire, England Mother-in-law Alton Staffordshire George Keeling abt 1851 Alton, Staffordshire, England Son Alton Staffordshire Lydia Keeling abt 1860 Alton, Staffordshire, England Daughter Alton Staffordshire Olive Maria Keeling abt 1857 Alton, Staffordshire, England Daughter Alton Staffordshire Samuel Keeling abt 1824 Alton, Staffordshire, England Head Alton Staffordshire Samuel Keeling abt 1855 Alton, Staffordshire, England Son Alton Staffordshire Sarah Keeling abt 1831 Alton, Staffordshire, England Wife Alton Staffordshire
