Unfortunately with the 1841 census you do not get relationships so it is difficult sometimes to work out who is who. However, Sarah could be Henry´s mother, George b 1796 (b 1794 in the IGI) could be Henry´s brother and Thomas b 1810 (b 1809 in the IGI) could be Henry´s brother. The others may, or may not be siblings to Henry as well Remember in the 1841 census the ages were rounded down, so someone who was aged between 30 and 34 would be given a birth date of 1811

elaine, i found that family a few days ago, i am positive theyre related because of location and names, but for the life of me i cant work out how they fit in yet

Eleanor Report 10 May 2006 17:06

This is just it, i dont know they came from thetford, it was a thomas and sarach i found having a child called henry in the right year. I am very new to this and i assumed this was the right family. But what you are all saying makes sence, no cars, herts to norfolk and notts is a huge distance. But thank you for all the advice, this is my first time getting back this far, hopefully it gets easier once you know where to look and how to make the detective in me kick in ;)

There is a Sarah Varney on the 1841 census living in Wormley which may, or may not be yours Betsy Varney abt 1811 Wormley Hertfordshire George Varney abt 1796 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire John Varney abt 1801 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire Mary Varney abt 1832 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire Sarah Varney abt 1771 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire Thomas Varney abt 1810 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire These seem to fit in with what Merry has found on the IGI

Right, so once you have the bap for Henry, the next step is to find out where in the family he comes (eldest/youngest) otherwise you might end up with the wrong marriage for his parents: Siblings: 1. SARAH VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 21 JUL 1802 2. SARAH VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 15 AUG 1802 Wormley, Hertford, England 3. GEORGE VERNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 28 JAN 1794 4. GEORGE VERNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 23 FEB 1794 Wormley, Hertford, England 5. HENRY VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 31 MAR 1805 6. HENRY VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 28 APR 1805 Wormley, Hertford, England 7. THOMAS VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 19 DEC 1809 8. THOMAS VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 14 JAN 1810 Wormley, Hertford, England 9. MARIA VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 09 APR 1808 10. MARIA VARNEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 17 JUL 1808 Wormley, Hertford, England The above are on the IGI ....but they are a bit gappy.....If it were me I would be finding out how to get a more comprehensive record from Hertfordshire. Try the family history soc....buy CD's or fiche of the PR's for Wormley......it can take months to work out one generation! This is where the fun begins...... Merry

It is pretty unusual for a couple to be born in Norfolk, marry in Nottingham, and then have a child in Hertfordshire! I'm not saying it is definitely not them, but very likely you have just picked up whatever was on the internet and put it together! There are lots of parish records that are not on the internet (yet) and if your ancestors did move from parish to parish it does make life difficult. If you are sure you have the right baptism for your Henry (hopefully the place matches up with his birthplace on the censuses), then I am guessing this is it, from the IGI: HENRY VARNEY Male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: 31 MAR 1805 Christening: 28 APR 1805 Wormley, Hertford, England Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: THOMAS VARNEY Family Mother: SARAH It is just possible that Thomas and Sarah would still be around to be on a census such as 1841 or 1851 if you are lucky, and if so, that would help. But if they are not, then what I would do first is see if there are other children listed on the IGI for the same parents, and there are a few at Wormley, Hertford, beginning in 1794 (surname spelt Verney for that one). There are several Varneys / Verneys in Nottingham from well before that. My guess is that the marriage you have found is not the right one, especially if you don't have Sarah's surname from somewhere else such as it being used for a middle name in the family. I'm still not clear how you know they came from Thetford, though? Kate.

OK - IGI information HENRY VARNEY Birth: 31 MAR 1805 Christening: 28 APR 1805 Wormley, Hertford, Parents: Father: THOMAS VARNEY Family Mother: SARAH

Eleanor

Eleanor Report 10 May 2006 17:00

yes elaine, same family, i traced then thru every census. Thetford only came into when i found his parents were called thomas and sarah, a search on them at about the right year im guessing gave thetford, so basically im trying to confirm these as parents but i dont know how to find out more about them

Eleanor

Eleanor Report 10 May 2006 16:58

i went to family search*org and found the birth for henry in the correct year and town, it gave thomas and sarah as his parents thanks for the help on this guys, i know its a pain because im new at this and struggling to keep the facts right

Elaine

Elaine Report 10 May 2006 16:58

This looks like the same family on 1841 Henry Varney abt 1809 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire John Varney abt 1837 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire Mary Varney abt 1836 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire Sarah Varney abt 1817 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire Thomas Varney abt 1841 Hertfordshire, England Wormley Hertfordshire

Eleanor

Eleanor Report 10 May 2006 16:57

Henry was born 1805, and no i just know sarah for his wife other than that scan i found, which may or may not be right. That post above this one is the correct family, but i cant get before that

Elaine

Elaine Report 10 May 2006 16:55

Where does Thetford and Norfolk come into the tree ? And how do you know that Henry´s parents are Thomas and Sarah ?

Elaine

Presumably we are only looking for a Thomas Varney marrying a Sarah X? You don't know her maiden name, by some unusual source? When was the first child born? Merry

Eleanor

Eleanor Report 10 May 2006 16:52

Gt amwell in hertfordshire

Kate

Kate Report 10 May 2006 16:48

Okay, and where was Henry born, please? Kate.

Eleanor

Eleanor Report 10 May 2006 16:47

all i know is this...thomas and sarah varney had a child henry varney in 1805, he married a sarah carter in 1836. Now all i have done is try to go back from henry on ancestry*com and i came up with thomas and sarah, thomas is a name passed many times in my family. all i found on the records for them was mention of thetford and nott, this st nicholas. i have no way of knowing if this is the right people, which was what led me to my question, about where i go from here and how i actually find out, as the record will be late 1700's

Are you getting mixed up with St Nicholas church in Great Yarmouth?

Kate

Kate Report 10 May 2006 16:41

I'm sure I'm being thick here, but can you please just fill me in a bit on what you already have about them? Did they move to Nottingham from Norfolk and have their children in Nottingham? Or were their children born in Norfolk? Or what? Kate.
