Thanks again for all the help and suggestions this morning. I've got some ideas now as to where to find some answers - also thanks for the census and birth/christening look ups.

I just googled and found there are papers from 1880 - at Lambeth palace for the home - it was a Church of England institution.

I don't know for certain that my Joseph is the one is Sussex, but the occupation and marital status match. He was a butcher. Thanks

Georgina As far as I know the one I want is the son of Thomas and Harriet. I'm told (its my partner's family) that the eldest son of Joseph would be Thomas and the eldest son of Thomas would be Joseph at this date. and yes - I am doing some research into my own family as well Thanks again

It does have the name of the home on the census image does it? I would def have a google to see what sort of institution it was/who ran it etc. My lot often ended up in homes for ancient mariners, run by chartitable organisations, so I would have a look for this home if I were you as it may give you clues of who went there.

Barbara if there were 2 Joseph Richardsons born same place around the same time are you sure the one in Sussex is yours? Georgina.

And I thought the middle of England was a long way from the home.

Merry

Merry Report 18 May 2006 11:11

I notice all the people in the home were from a long way away and all over the place.....(one lost his way in Melborne, Australia!) Merry

Heather

Well, could just be the case that the home was the only suitable one that would take him. He may have been placed by a charitable organisation/church? Have you tried googling for information about the place?

I always look at siblings - it's surprising what you can find. I have one family in Lincs that seem to play musical chairs - they swap children at every census.

Barbra

Barbra Report 18 May 2006 10:07

He was at home with his family in 1891 - where he should have been.
