It does have the name of the home on the census image does it? I would def have a google to see what sort of institution it was/who ran it etc. My lot often ended up in homes for ancient mariners, run by chartitable organisations, so I would have a look for this home if I were you as it may give you clues of who went there.

Georgina As far as I know the one I want is the son of Thomas and Harriet. I'm told (its my partner's family) that the eldest son of Joseph would be Thomas and the eldest son of Thomas would be Joseph at this date. and yes - I am doing some research into my own family as well Thanks again

Have googled the home and found precisely nothing!! The men have all sorts of occupations too.................... Oh, UPDATE...It's HANCOX HOME.....not very clear n the page, but good on the description of enumeration district! Merry

I don't know for certain that my Joseph is the one is Sussex, but the occupation and marital status match. He was a butcher. Thanks

I just googled and found there are papers from 1880 - at Lambeth palace for the home - it was a Church of England institution.
