Merry............sorry about that my best mate talks for England........ that must be her,despite her being down as cawthorne in the census......the name has been misspelt and for some reason the search facility on IGI and freebmd doesnt include Tudbury with Tudsbury,but includes more different versions of the name ......... that must be her ....cheers Merry.

my only problem is that she was recorded as Anne E Tudsbury,then Annie E. Tudsbury,then Annie Helena tudsbury....think she was just a stroppy mare ....

Still don't understand where Cawthorne came in. Some of my rellies were from Cawthorne - hence the interest. Do you think it possible that she was adopted (informally in those days) into the family, maybe from another relative? It seems really strange that they should be in Cawthorne at all - were they miners? Anne

No they were all carpenters local to their village- maybe they were passing through and were being very precise as to where she was born......in one census it says Cannon Hall instead but i think it has been misheard when transferred onto the sheet. what i cant fathom is why they registered some but not all-the poorly daughter my well have been a factor.....she died or maybe was ill when the mother was due to give birth to Annie,maybe she was taken to relatives away from a sick child just in case.

Cannon Hall is in Cawthorne. The local 'big house'. Is it possible the mother was a servant there? The Spencer-Stanhope family owned the estate. They were apparently very good landlords and employers and benefactors to the village. Anne

she may have been-another thought is that the dad was a master carpenter and did furniture for the king.....he also exhibited in the 1851 exhibition in London at this time.....so a busy family and they were top notch wood carvers and carpenters-Ive seen some of their stuff go for £20k at auctions.....so maybe at that time he had work on and commisions and it was easier for the family to lodge there?

The scenario I see is that the child was physically born there,but they went to register her in the home county...?She was termed as a Wood carvers Wife later !!

I think that's quite likely. My book about Cawthorne says that the Spencer-Stanhopes of Cannon Hall were the largest employers in the village. Patrons of the arts etc. Thye would probably have been up for some high class carpentry. Anne

mmmmthat all adds up then........someone views his work at the exhibition then he gets commissions......the sons carved the lectern for the local village church after this,and they also exhibited in paris......makes sense-amazing what a little detail on a census can provide to the picture.

Update- I have emailed a group called The Friends of Cannon Hall with details and they have lots of archive material to wade through. It has been suggested by a lady doing the one name study that the nottinghamshire birth reference is another family already accounted for but she is double checking ,and reminded me that people wer not fined till after 1870 for not registering births.
