LOL Glen, yes, I can see that clock and watchmaker! I shant tell James Legon who was excitedly looking through past Clerks to the Watermen! Let me know what you want done at North Elmham - Ive never been there but I will go if you want anything. Wouldnt it be great if in the middle of the village is a statue to Glen Elmers 1700 and he is wearing a thong with tinsel hanging from his loins and holding aloft a pair of turnips.

Thanks for the offer Heather and the website addies earlier. The station is quite well catered for on the web anyhow,i know at some point the National School ha d a siding built and have the images from that.Shame it doesn't help to work out if the photographer was on the farm or across the lines from it. Having said that,Grange Farm still exists in some form. There is mention on the NOAH site of John Elmer,(well a document from the 1956 regarding the tomb of a John Elmer in the churchyard).I wonder if he is my tailor/registrar of births and deaths. Re the water master details ,Phoenix has found a reference to a chap with the right name in the right area leaving a will,a 'clock and watch maker' by trade. I'm wondering if the 11 year old handwritten Grantham RO issued cert such a poor copy that 'clerk + water master' should say 'clock and watch maker' Glen

I go out for an hour and come back to find you abusing my Gimp erm, my friend, Glen. On a serious note (hand over mouth) honestly Glen there was definitely an outing last year or year before where the station at North Elmham was opened and people could get out there. I wish I could find details as if it happens again, Id be happy to go for you and take some photos. Is it just the station you wanted or all over?

..but Glen has already fallen through the ceiling and is now buried in the cellar with the weight of ELMHAM THROUGH THE AGES pinning him down (shoulda used flimsy paper, Glen, and not so much real earth) OC

The builders have just arrived with one of those ball and chain things (no, not the one Mrs G removed from her ankle before taking the train to Bournemouth - the sort to smack down the house).......................... Merry

Fast forward a few weeks... Mrs Glen, thoroughly fed up with the banging noises (which are admittedly, not as bad as they were a few weeks ago) and hubby's continued absence, dons her best coat and hat, goes to the Solicitor, divorces Glen, puts the house on the market and sells it to a Builder, who has had his eye on this place for ages. He is going to demolish it and build 14 flats on the site. Mrs Glen gets on a train to Bournemouth, intending to go and live with her unmarried sister, but gets chatting to a very nice young man. They have a whirlwind romance and when they get to Bournemouth, they nip into the Registrar's and get married by special licence. Mrs Glen hands over all her money to her new hubby, who says he is just nipping off to the Bank to put it in safekeeping...Mrs Glan waits...and waits... OC

Mrr and Mrs Nextdoor's teenage son is known for his banging exploits, so Mrs Glen (who doesn't approve of that sort of thing) decides against contacting them. She stuffs two cottonwool balls in her ears and can now concentrate on doing her housework, without worrying about any extraneous noise. (she wears a wrap-round pinny to do her chores, plus Marigold Gloves) ****the banging sounds get louder**** Merry

Merry Can't say I heard anything, but then I am deaf.... Mrs Glen is downstairs, getting very annoyed because she can hear an odd banging noise, but its muffled and she resolves to Have Words with Next Door about their noisy teenage son. Mr and Mrs Next Door have gone on the trip of a lifetime to visit rellies in OZ and are planning a leisurely motoring trip while they are there. OC

DISASTER!!!!!!! Mrs Glen has just decided to re-paper the upstairs hallway ceiling........she stood on a chair and it was a bit tricky with all that soggy paper folded all over the place, but she managed it.........BUT she has papered across the trap!! (or was it deliberate??!) Mrs G has now gone downstairs to do some dusting.......she wonders where Mr Tinsel Knickers has gone???? ''Glen?????!!'' ''G-L-E-N!!!!'' she shouted....... Getting no response she gives in and puts the telly on........... three weeks later, she phones the pest controllers because there's a funny smell, which seems a bit like rotting vegetables, permeating the house....................... Nowhere near big enough i think. Certainly most Elmer references on GR are Suffolk born, the places of birth quoted from the 51 onwards show Bintley/Bintee/Bushey and Buskey,so they could be mistranscribed or misheard at the time, maybe even leading off into Hertfordshire. I have quite a bit from the Norfolk Transcription Site, but the surnames linking into the Elmer family from 1800 to 1840 all have better coverage (one surname has over 1500 entries and i haven't got an exact year of birth) Martha (g g/m) was one of six and her dad was one of 9,but i have stalled at 3x g g/f Joseph Elmer,no idea how many sibs he had or his parents at the moment. Of course, I look at this and wonder if the surname Elmer is a corruption of Elmham...you know, 'Elmham -mer' If so, then the name goes back a long way, certainly to mediaevel times and manorial records....how big, exactly, is your loft, Glen? OC
