Afternoon all. The family that raised granny were called Rawlings. The only thing i can think is when she married the second time she was asked to produce a birth certificate (but she was 40 years old at the time). I remember i had to produce mine for the registrar when my wedding was booked,but i was a young looking 23 year old at the time,apart from that i can think of no reason for it being needed. When the death was registered the registrar did briefly vanish round the back and returned with a weighty register and very quickly found the maiden name in it.God knows how or why she did it but it took less than a minute. This really has got me bugged now and leads to sevearal questions. Was the birth registered? If so in what name? When? Very strange!! Movie in Edinburgh this afternoon,(need some inspiration) Glen

I married in 1986 and I too had to show my birth certificate (I had turned 18 4 weeks before I married) Cus my mum couldnt find my certificate I had to go to the local register office on Shakespear st Nottm to get a short one so I could book my wedding (was a bit miffed at the time at having to mess about lol) My hubby had to show his divorce papers (he'd been divorced for 2 years before I met him just in case people think im a marriage wrecker lol im not he was living alone when I met him ) I couldnt understand why I had to show it cus my mum and dad where our witnesess. Must just be certain districts that insiste on Birth certificates before ya marry hey? Angie xxx

Glen Im having exactly the same problem with my Nanna she was b in 1912 other than that ??????????? I havnt a clue theres no birth at all for her im waiting for her second marriage certificate to come to see if that sheds any light onto it (im hoping now after reading your post that her dads name will be on the 2nd marriage as it wasnt on the first one to my grandad) ive also solved the cant find a death for her lol thanx to my new found uncle (my dads brother) she apparently married for the 3rd time and he said she died in 1998 :( although he doesnt know where she was born and he never met any of her family!!!!!!!! so a mystery thats a bit of a headache at the mo. Glen.....if she had to produce her birth cert at her second marriage, then we have to think what she produced!! On that cert, I guess her name was recorded as ''Agnes A - Something beginning with O'' (sorry, I've forgotten it since yesterday!) and condition ''widow''. Then she has her father down as Walker. That's all OK, but............................... surely, the vicar/registrar is going to turn his nose up at being shown a birth cert in any name, other than Walker, isn't he???? Merry

There is a great big stonking clue here, of course. If, when you registered your GM's death, the Registrar was able to nip out the back and return with a book which had her maiden name in it, then that book is still there and suggests mightily that the birth was registered there. Register Offices dont hold registers for other areas. Hope you see what I'm getting at here - the RO where you registered her death, also has a copy of her birth. Twere me, I'd be on the phone to the Registrar, 9 am Monday morning! OC

I thought that, but are we saying that provided with a date of birth, the registrar was willing to go through his birth registers, looking for a birth with the right forenames and dob and found one for Lotus? And all in 30 seconds (according to Mr Turnip!) I find this all very strange. Still, maybe Glen should contact Gainsborough registrars and ask them to look?! UPDATE - Glen and his mum believed she was born in London, so why would the Gainsbro' registrar look in HIS books? Merry

Merry Because the Gainsborough Registrar knew something Glen and his Mum didnt. Maybe his Gran was BORN in London, but registered in Gainsborough - maybe some time after the birth? Didnt you say her mother was an Actress? May have been part of a theatre company that was touring Gainsborough at the time. I would still be on the Registrar's back at 9 am though, even if its only to ask what book they could possibly have looked in to find this info? It MUST have been one of their local Registers. OC

Yes - everything suggests that, doesn't it.........but, it still seems soooo strange. Of course, her first marriage WAS in Gainsbro' in 1929 (in the name of Lotus), but I'm guessing Glen's mum didn't know that date (though she may have known the first hubby's name) until they removed the tape from the 50-year-old box with the old certs in it .................and that was after the death had been registered............... GLEN - we MUST be told the answer - and sooner rather than later! lol Merry

Three of us actually.It really has me intrigued,and you know what family rumours are like.It still seems rather strange and a few things only really hit home last night when i had a lull with the birth family tree,(what a glutton for punishment eh?) I will pass on the outcome of this as and when it becomes clearer. Glen
